Removal of Remazol brilliant violet textile dye by adsorption using rice hulls

Abstract: ObstractThe release of industrial effluents into the environment causes widespread contamination of aquatic systems. Adsorption is seen as one of the most promising treatment processes, and lignocellulosic materials have gained prominence as adsorbents. This study investigates the potential of rice hulls, either in natura or treated with nitric acid, as adsorbents for removal of the dye. The adsorbents were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, solid state 13 C-NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, and pH at poin… Show more

“…Following adsorption, new bands appear, including at 1398 cm -1 , representing sulfonic groups characteristic of the dye; at 1648 cm -1 , indicating naphthalene; and between 1980 and 2281 cm -1 , representing the dye fingerprint zone. Stretching vibrations appear above 2967 cm -1 , specific to phenolic O-H, secondary amine N-H, and aromatic C-H bonds [48][49][50] .…”

“…When the eggshell powder was mixed with the dye solution, calcium salts may partially dissolve and release Ca 2+ , HCO 3 − , CO 3 2− and OH − ions, which can form a negatively surfaced charge 54,55 . In acidic media (HCl), the eggshell surface exhibits a positive charge, so there is a high electrostatic attraction between the eggshell powder and the anionic, negatively charged dye (this dye contains aromatic rings such as phenolic OH and sulfonate SO 3 − groups that ionize in aqueous solution and form coloured anions 49 ). By adding NaOH, the number of negatively charged sites of eggshell increases, resulting in electrostatic repulsion.…”

“…The values of the contact angles at different concentrations of stearic acid for the fabrics treated in ethanol and in toluene are reported in Table 2. [61,62]. The slight shift of the resonance corresponding to the group -CO-with respect to the same group -CO-of the stearic acid, together with the broadening of the signals corresponding to the -CH2groups of the aliphatic chain of the stearic acid, as well as a slight chemical shift, would indicate the binding or formation of ester groups in the flax fabric after treatment.…”

“…The observed data are well reproduced in the simulated data, as shown in Figure 7, supporting that all the isotherm data are described well by the Langmuir equation. A comparison of maximum RBV dye adsorption onto various adsorbents reported in the literature [41][42][43][44] is shown in Table 5. Chitosan 10B is found to be an efficient and promising adsorbent to remove RBV from aqueous solution.…”
