Fabrication of poly(lactic acid) incorporated chitosan nanocomposites for enhanced functional polyester fabric

Abstract: This study dealt with the fabrication and analysis of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) mediated chitosan nanocomposite. Such a novel nanobiocomposite may get future applications in drug delivery, and nanofinising of textile and polymer surfaces. Herein, this nanocomposite has been considered as an antibacterial finishing agent for a hydrophobic textile fabric like polyester. The prepared nanocomposite was characterized for zeta size and morphology, and subsequently applied on a woven polyester fabric though a coross li… Show more

“…Examples of natural polymers used in the fabrication of nanofibers with electrospinning method [50][51][52][53] include creatine [54], gelatin [55], cellulose [56], and polysaccharides such as chitosan and alginate. The synthesis of the PLA/ Chitosan nanofibers has been reviewed in recent studies [57][58][59]. Microwave irradiation as a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and high efficiency method is used for preparing nanoparticles for various applications [60], electrospinning process with high-voltage power, generate polymer fibers in nanometer dimensions which show unique physical and chemical properties [61].…”

“…Another solution may be to use the technique of emulsification and lyophilization of polymer solutions of different chemical nature, which enables, for example, the obtaining of chitosan/collagen/PLA biocomposites [22]. Most techniques for obtaining PLA/CS composites are based on the use of a chitosan solution dissolved in diluted organic acids, which entails the use of additional methods associated with the removal or neutralization of acid residues in the finished material [23,24].…”

“…In another study the authors investigated chitosan encapsulated poly(lactic acid) nanosphere and its antibacterial activity by applying it on hydrophobic textile fabric like polyester and subsequently on woven polyester fabric though a cross linker. Its imparted good antibacterial properties to the fabric [115].…”
