Social representations of older adults regarding quality of life

Objective: to identify the social representations of older adults regarding quality of life, and to analyze the care practices adopted to promote it. Method: qualitative, exploratory, descriptive research, applying the Theory of Social Representations. Thirty older people from a Health Academy of Rio de Janeiro participated in the study. The software Alceste was used, and lexical analysis of data was performed. Results: social representations of quality of life are based on the social determinants of health; they evidence knowledge and practices of care by valuing physical activities. The practices promoting quality of life comprise healthy eating habits, daily physical exercise, social participation, interaction and socialization, accomplishment of leisure activities and daily tasks with independence and autonomy, and support and family contact. Final considerations: the elderly have a global understanding of the concept of quality of life, coordinate knowledge built in daily life and knowledge coming from the technical-professional field, which evidences the multidimensionality of the concept.

RESUMO.A representação social que o indivíduo tem sobre o ambiente poderá influenciar no manejo dos problemas ambientais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar a representação social de problemas ambientais e a forma de enfrentamento destes pelas mulheres quilombolas da comunidade Patioba em Sergipe. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, com a utilização de metodologia participativa, com amostra de 20 mulheres maiores de 18 anos. Os resultados evidenciaram a participação de mulheres com idade entre 24 e 54 anos, em sua maioria casadas, escolaridade média, ocupação do lar e com renda familiar de até um salário mínimo. O acesso à água potável, saneamento básico e coleta do lixo é precário nessa comunidade. A representação social sobre os problemas sugere percepção de desequilíbrio ambiental pelos participantes da comunidade Patioba.Palavras-Chave: Meio ambiente; grupos de risco; mulheres; políticas públicas.ABSTRACT. The individual social representation about the environment may influence the management of environmental problems. The objective of the present study was to identify the social representation of environmental problems and confrontation form of quilombola women of Patioba community, Sergipe. This is a qualitative approach study, using a participatory methodology, with a sample of 20 women older than 18 years. The results had evidenced the participation of women aged 24 to 54 years, mostly married, average schooling, householdoccupation and family income up to a minimum wage. Access to clean water, basic sanitation and garbage collection is precarious in this community. The social representation of environmental problems seems to point to an environmental imbalance perception by the participants of Patioba Community.

Objective: analyze the potential of the Theoretical Paradigm of Social Representations and Social Cognition in nursing and health research.Method: reflection based on authors who serve as references in the elaboration, complementation and dissemination of this paradigm, with an important trajectory in social psychology and health sciences.Results: departing from the particularity of the epistemological object of nursing, which is care, Social Representations could be considered as autochtonous elements of the lay/secular and daily cognitions, which support the social construction of reality and the organization of care practices.Conclusion: in the light of these records, it is highlighted that the heuristic value of the Social Respresentations and of Social Cognition has been maintained since its proposal in the 1960's. Consequently, the three models that irrefutably result from the development of the field study about the social representations in health have permitted significant approximation by some studies in nursing and related areas. Consequentemente, os três modelos que emergiram como um resultado irrefutável do desenvolvimento do campo de estudo das representações sociais na saúde, permitiram uma aproximação significativa por algumas pesquisas em enfermagem e áreas relacionadas.
