Accelerated aging as vigor test for sunn hemp seeds

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the most appropriate method to assess the sunn hemp ( Crotalaria juncea L.) seed vigor in the accelerated aging test. Five seed lots from harvest 2007/2008 were evaluated for germination, vigor and seedling emergence in the field. Accelerated aging test was performed at 41°C during 48, 72 and 96 hours, with and without sodium chloride saturated solution. Then, the promising procedure was also performed for 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 harvests. In the traditional accelerated aging test… Show more

“…In this sense, seed vigor tests and the very concept of vigorous seeds are used in seed production programs as an important strategy for controlling quality, since they help to guarantee an adequate positioning of the plant population in the field (Silva et al, 2017).…”

“…Nevertheless, in spite of this differentiation, for these periods of accelerated aging of 72 and 96 hours, the decline in germination was drastic, as also observed by Oliveira et al (2014) in physic nut and by Silva et al (2017) in rattlepod (Crotalaria).…”

“…Variations in root growth in the different substrates were attributed to their particle size conditions, which may or may not enable rooting, depending on the aeration conditions. Number of leaves, fresh mass, and dry mass variables are suitable for evaluating vigor based on seedling development, and are used to complement the information obtained from germination test (BARBOSA et al, 2012;SILVA et al, 2017). A higher number of leaves is related to more vigorous seedlings because of greater germination potential; and consequently, higher speed of leaf formation.…”
