Detection of serum amyloid-A concentration in the calf clinically diagnosed with pneumonia, enteritis and pneumoenteritis

Abstract: The aim of this study is to determine serum amyloid-A (SAA) concentration in the cases of pneumonia, pneumoenteritis, and enteritis which are frequently encountered in calves in veterinary medicine. Although a great deal of experimental studies has been conducted in this field, studies on naturally infectedcalves are quite few. Eighty calves at the age of 0-6 months were used in the study and the calves were divided into four groups. Due to the clinical examination, the calves diagnosed with pneumonia (Group P… Show more

“…In veterinary medicine, SAA is considered the major APP in horses and one of the major APPs in cattle and pigs (Hulten and Demmers, 2002; Pradeep, 2014). Its concentration rises in experimental and natural infections of different natures (Campbell et al ., 2005; Kabu et al ., 2016; Joshi et al ., 2018), including viral infections (Heegaard et al ., 2000; Sánchez-cordón et al ., 2007) and other conditions such as local aseptic inflammation, traumatic reticuloperitonitis, non-infectious diarrhea, or surgery (Nunokawa et al ., 1993; Jacobson et al ., 2001; Parra et al ., 2006; Pourjafar et al ., 2011; Baydar and Dabak, 2014). In some of these cases, SAA can remain high for some time after the trigger has disappeared (Aitken et al ., 2019).…”

“…In the other study, significant increases were observed in serum Hp and SAA concentrations in calves suspected from Bovine respiratory disease (10). Also significant increase in the SAA concentration had been observed in calves with enteritis and pneumonia compared to the control group (11). Coşkun et al (4) reported that SAA and Hp levels in both of the blood serum and the bronchoalveolar lavage were higher in calves with bronchopneumonia than in healthy calves.…”

“…During rotavirus, coronavirus and E.coli infections, a significant increase in SAA concentrations as well as diarrhea were observed in calves (Balikci and Al 2014). In case of naturally occurring rotavirus or coronavirus coinfection with Cryptosporidium versus mono-infection, significantly higher SAA concentration increase has been previously reported (Eckersall et al, 2001;Kabu et al 2016). In a previous study Molina et al (2014) established that SAA concentration significantly increased in animals infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus.…”
