“…Plot arrangement influenced the experimental precision, i.e., plots with greater dimension and perpendicularly located to the plant rows, regardless of shape, usually have lower coefficients of variation. This was also reported by DONATO et al (2008) andBRUM et al (2016), who calculated the optimal plot size in bananas and broccoli, respectively, observed a decrease in CV with a differentiated rate of decrease and an increase in plot size. Figure 1 shows that the estimates of optimal plot size (x 0 ) for the morpho-agronomic traits ranged from x 0 = 1.64 bu, approximately x 0 = 2 bu for the precocity character (PREC) to x 0 = 6.46 bu (7 bu) for the number of commercial fruits per plant at nine months (NCF9) character.…”

“…The CV Xo to optimum plot size ranged from 8% for aerial part height to 20% for root dry matter. Similar results were verified by Brum et al (2016) in the evaluation of two characteristics in broccoli using Paranaíba et al's (2009) method. Such a behavior is explained due to the fact that the CV Xo is dependent on X 0 , as can be seen in the equation 3 for Meier and Lessman's (1971) To emphasize the importance of the results, the characteristic root dry matter is taken as basis, using the equation 5 and classification of CV according Pimentel-Gomes (2009) which considers as low values up to 10%, average values between 10 and 20%, high to values between 20% and 30% and very high values above 30%.…”

“…From 128 cells containing three seeds, four cells only did not show formation of seedling. For purpose of this research, the values of the missing cells were obtained by mean of the two neighboring seedlings in the row, as recommended by Brum, Brandelero, Vargas, Storck, and Zanini (2016). Therefore, for low frequency of fault and good development of seedlings, the data obtained are suitable for study proposed.…”

“…According to [31], experimental units with up to 20 BUs (12.00 m²) can be used as basic units of practical size and therefore used for discussion purposes. We verified that to detect a 10% difference between averages of cultivars, it is possible obtaining plots of practical size with CV up to 18%, except for 4, 8, and 12 cultivars combined with three for the CV of 24%, using 4, 8, 12, and 16 treatments with seven replicates and for the CVs of 30 and 41.86% (CV of one BU) none combinations should be recommended.…”
