Surface Treatments for Repair of Feldspathic, Leucite - and Lithium Disilicate-Reinforced Glass Ceramics Using Composite Resin

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different surface conditioning methods on the microtensile bond strength of a restorative composite repair in three types of dental ceramics: lithium disilicate-reinforced, leucite-reinforced and feldspathic. Twelve blocks were sintered for each type of ceramic (n=3) and stored for 3 months in distilled water at 37 °C. The bonding surface of ceramics was abraded with 600-grit SiC paper. Surface treatments for each ceramic were: GC (control)-none; GDB-diamon… Show more

“…In doing so, it promotes micromechanical retention between the ceramic surface and the adhesive resin, thereby increasing the bond strength [7,24,25]. Comparatively, treatment with phosphoric acid produces minimal etching of the surface [26]. As a result, phosphoric acid etching is usually performed only to clean the adhered surface.…”

“…To further improve these properties, many technological advances have recently enabled the development of new materials with higher mechanical strength, such as those reinforced by leucite, lithium disilicate, infiltrated by glass, injected and machined [14].…”

“…They were blasted with aluminum oxide, conditioned by hydrofluoric acid followed by the application of a silane. The blasting with aluminum oxide is used to increase the surface roughness, as well as clean and activate the surface, according to several authors [5,8,14,15,17]. The hydrofluoric acid works by creating pores on the surface through preferential dissolution of the glassy phase of the ceramic matrix [6,11].…”
