Morphological strategies of Cabomba (Cabombaceae), a genus of aquatic plants

Abstract: This paper describes the vegetative and reproductive morphology of Cabombaceae species in Brazil, discussing its strategies for survival in an aquatic habitat. Through studies in the field, in cultivation and in the herbarium, we examined the following species: Cabomba aquatica, C. caroliniana, C. furcata and C. haynesii. In cultivation, only C. aquatica, C. furcata and C. haynesii produced flowers. In those three species, the flowers opened during the day on two consecutive days, submerging during the night, … Show more

“…Relative to the inferred common ancestor of Cabombaceae and Nymphaeaceae, the perianth was reduced from more than two whorls to two whorls in Cabombaceae, and in Cabomba the androecium was reduced to one whorl with stamens in double positions. Anthesis lasts for two days in both Cabomba, which is insect pollinated, and Brasenia, which is wind pollinated (Schneider & Jeter, 1982;Osborn & Schneider, 1988;Taylor & Williams, 2009;Lima & al. 2014).…”
