The common black field cricket, Gryllus assimilis (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), damages young plants of red cedar, Juniperus virginiana (Cupressaceae); strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa (Rosaceae); sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum (Poaceae); teak, Tectona grandis (Lamiaceae); upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum (Malvaceae); and, mainly, Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae). The objective of this study was to investigate the biological and behavioral parameters of this insect in the laboratory and in Eucalyptus spp. plantations in Inhambupe, Bahia State, Brazil. The incubation period and the viability of G. assimilis eggs were 11.87 days and approximately 22%, respectively. The duration of the nymphal stage was 62.34 days with approximately 60% of the nymphs obtained in the laboratory being females. The average number of egg batches per female, eggs per female, and eggs per batch per female of this insect were 25.50, 862.17, and 34.65, respectively. G. assimilis females lived for 76.50 days in the adult stage, and 138.34 days in total, from egg through nymph to adult. Males produced three characteristic sounds: one for the marking of territory, one for courtship, and one when alone. G. assimilis fed primarily on weeds but, in their absence, it damaged young Eucalyptus spp. plants. This paper presents important data on the biology and behavior of G. assimilis; this information may encourage additional biological research, laboratory rearing, and integrated management of this pest.

Eucalyptus are trees native to Australia and have been cultivated in various regions of the world. In its worldwide expansion, several native and exotic insects began to use these plants for their survival. Leptocybe invasa Fisher & La-Salle, 2004 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a gall wasp that lay eggs into leaves, young branches, and petioles causing galls; however, there are resistant and susceptible eucalyptus genotypes to gall formation. This study aimed to compare the chemical composition of eucalyptus genotypes and relate it to resistance and susceptibility to gall formation. Leaf oils were extracted by steam distillation and oil compositions were analyzed. The essential oils of eucalyptus genotypes resistant to gall formation had 12 constituents, which do not occur in susceptible genotypes, probably one of the factors that contributes to the resistance of these plants to gall formation. Thus, we suggest an early evaluation of resistant or susceptible eucalyptus genotypes, based on the chemical composition of the essential oils of these plants, avoiding economic losses of planting susceptible genotypes.

Invasive grasses reduce resource availability, mainly nutrients in the soil, and the growth of eucalyptus plants. Efficient management to increase productivity depends on understanding levels of weed interference in eucalyptus plantations. The nutritional efficiency of eucalyptus plants in competition has been evaluated by plant tissue analysis. The objective was to evaluate the growth, relative accumulation of nutrients, and nutritional efficiency of the eucalyptus clonal hybrid I144 (Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis), in competition with Megathyrsus maximus cv. BRS zuri, Urochloa brizantha cv. marandu, Urochloa decumbens cv. basilisk and in the control (eucalyptus plants without weed competition). The experiment was carried out with a completely randomized design, with four treatments and ten replications. The height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, dry matter of leaves and stem, nutrient content in leaves and uptake, transport, and N, P, and K utilization efficiency of the eucalyptus clonal hybrid were evaluated at 110 days after transplantation. The growth parameters and relative contents of macro and micronutrients in the eucalyptus clonal hybrid were lower in competition with M. maximus, U. brizantha and U. decumbens. The efficiency of N, P, and K uptake and transport by the eucalyptus clonal hybrid was 29.41 and 7.32% lower in competition with U. decumbens than in the control treatments, respectively. The efficiency of N, P, and K utilization by eucalypts was 13.73, 9.18, and 22.54% lower in competition with M. maximus, U. brizantha, and U. decumbens, respectively. The reduced growth and nutritional parameters of the eucalyptus clonal hybrid were more evident in competition with U. decumbens. Plant tissue analyses efficiently determined the level of competition for nutrients between species. Crop competition with grasses can decrease the efficiency and use of nutrients, which consequently reduces plant development and productivity.
