This article addresses a case study on the application of criteria for harvesting, aiming at restoration and profitability in a degraded tropical forest in the Amazon. The objective is to provide technical and economic information to promote a truly sustainable silvicultural management system in forests with this profile and turn them into a desirable financial asset for conservation and social development. In the forest census, 85.907 trees ha−1 (100.8566 m3 ha−1) were inventoried with diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 25 cm, belonging to 106 commercial species. When applying the harvest criteria, 19.923 trees ha−1 (29.99 m3 ha−1), referring to 53 species, were destined for harvest. Some trees were selected by more than one criterion, totalizing 17.985 trees ha−1 by density, 1.831 trees ha−1 by compromised health, 0.212 trees ha−1 by maximum dbh, 18.933 trees ha−1 by minimum dbh, 1.385 trees ha−1 by tree stem (quality 3), and 0.080 trees ha−1 by species conservation. In all scenarios, the application of criteria for harvesting proved to be profitable with excellent cost–benefit ratios. The selection of trees with a minimum cutting diameter of 25 cm in shorter cycles tends to allow the promotion of new commercial species. The set of actions presented has the potential to favor the maintenance of biodiversity and expansion of low-density populations, health and the potential increment of the forest productivity. In addition, it is more feasible for the supply of forest products in a shorter time than provided for in Brazilian regulations; however, they must respect the specificities of the species and also of the site.

The importance of native forest seeds, free of phytopathogens, is a strategy for the implantation of quality forest plantations. The scarcity of information about the health conditions of seeds of native forest species causes the spread of diseases. The objective of this work was to determine a method of sanitary analysis to identify pathogens in seeds of the species of Austronium graveolens, Bauhinia forficata and Cordia trichotoma (Vell.). The treatments consisted of filter paper methods with and without disinfestation in the periods of seven and 15 days, 15 days with water restriction, with BDA medium by seven and 15 days and BDA medium with water restriction during 15 days. For each test, it was used 400 seeds. The results showed that for each forest specie seeds the best detection method was in a Petri dish with culture medium and seed disinfestation, the Austronium graveolens and Bauhinia forficata seeds need an incubation period of 15 days with water restriction and Cordia trichotoma (Vell.) seeds of seven days.

Goiaba-serrana, a fruit species native to the southern region of Brazil, is promising in ecological and commercial terms. The species propagates naturally through sexual (seeds); however, it may be produced by cutting, grafting, and micropropagation. Several fungal genera can be associated with seeds and be transmitted to seedlings. Thus, this study aimed to identify fungal genera and to analyze different substrates for the germination of Acca sellowiana, associated with seeds from a different origin. To evaluate the microorganisms associated with the seeds, the method of incubation on a paper substrate (“blotter test”) was used. The germination test was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme, (2 x 4), with 4 repetitions of 25 seeds per substrate and lot. The factors corresponded to two origin (Serafina Corrêa and Vacaria, state of Rio Grande do Sul) and four substrates (sand, paper roll, on paper and vermiculite). The fungal genera associated with goiaba-serrana seeds were: Penicillium spp., Aspergillus spp. and Trichoderma spp. The sanity test showed the origin influences the incidence of fungi in the seeds and physiological quality. Moreover, the origin of Serafina Corrêa presented better physiological quality in relation to the Vacaria lot. Any of the substrates used can be used for the germination of goiabaserrana seeds.
