The aim of this study was to assess the biological aspects and food preferences of Helicoverpa armigera fed different sunflower genotypes and an artificial diet. Tests were performed under multiple-choice and no-choice conditions to evaluate the biological characteristics of H. armigera. In addition, the biological data obtained were used to determine parameters of fertility life tables. The results showed that H. armigera does not have a feeding preference among the sunflower genotypes tested. The larval period on sunflower ranged from 15.0 to 16.2 days. The maximum fecundity on sunflower was 542.6 eggs/female and that on the artificial diet was 794.5 eggs/female. In general, insects feeding on Helio 250 consumed greater quantities of leaves, had higher survival until the end of the pupal stage, displayed high population growth rates, and had low population doubling times, suggesting that in the field populations will achieve greater population densities when fed on Helio 250. Insects that fed on CF101 consumed smaller leaf areas, had lower survival until the end of the pupal stage, lower fertility rates, and lower population growth rates, and may also have displayed lower population densities and smaller reductions in field productivity. This insect developed best on an artificial diet in comparison to sunflower genotypes studied.

ABSTRACT. This study evaluated the parasitism of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) on eggs of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) at different ages and densities. The rates of parasitism and emergence, the number of parasitoids emerged per egg and sex ratio of offspring were evaluated in both experiments. Eggs of H. armigera up to 36 hours provided greater parasitism and emergence of adults compared to eggs up to 60 hours old. The number of parasitoids, which emerged per host egg, was greater than one and the sex ratio remained around 80% of females, regardless of the egg development stage. Females of T. pretiosum responded with superior rates of parasitism, emergence and number of parasitoids per egg at the densities of 20 and 25 eggs of H. armigera. These results indicate that T. pretiosum parasite with superior performance in eggs of up to 36h of age and densities of 20 eggs per female day -1 in laboratory conditions. These results will help to establish the intervals between releases of parasitoids, aiming to control this pest, when adjusted with knowledge of the survival of the parasitoids in the field and in pest infestation.Keywords: biological control, exotic pest, egg parasitoid, host-parasitoid interaction, noctuidae.Influência da idade e densidade de ovos de Helicoverpa armigera no parasitismo de Trichogramma pretiosum RESUMO. Este trabalho avaliou o parasitismo de Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) em ovos de Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) em diferentes idades e densidades. As taxas de parasitismo e emergência, número de parasitoides emergidos por ovo e razão sexual dos descendentes foram avaliados em ambos os experimentos. Ovos de H. armigera de até 36 horas proporcionaram maior parasitismo e emergência dos adultos em comparação com ovos com até 60 horas de idade. O número de parasitoides, que emergiram por ovo hospedeiro, foi superior a 1 e a razão sexual permaneceu em torno de 80% de fêmeas, independentemente do estágio de desenvolvimento do ovo. Fêmeas de T. pretiosum responderam com taxas superiores de parasitismo, emergência e número de parasitoides por ovo nas densidades de 20 e 25 ovos de H. armigera. Estes resultados indicam que T. pretiosum parasita com desempenho superior em ovos de até 36h de idade e densidades de 20 ovos por fêmea dia -1 em condições laboratoriais. Estes resultados ajudarão a estabelecer os intervalos entre as liberações de parasitoides, visando o controle desta praga, quando ajustado com o conhecimento da sobrevivência dos parasitoides no campo e na infestação de pragas.Palavras-chave: controle biológico, praga exótica, parasitoide de ovo, interação hospedeiro-parasitoide, noctuidae.

Lethal and growth inhibitory activities of Neotropical Annonaceae-derived extracts, commercial formulation, and an isolated acetogenin against Helicoverpa armigera

Among tropical plant families, members of Annonaceae have great potential as a source of biopesticides. To develop an alternative tool for control of Helicoverpa armigera, efficacy of ethanolic extracts from seeds of five species belonging to the genus Annona (A. montana Macfad., A. mucosa Jacq., A. muricata L., A. reticulata L. and A. sylvatica A. St.-Hil.) and an acetogenin-based commercial bioinsecticide (Anosom Ò 1 EC, 10,000 ppm of annonin as the main active ingredient) were evaluated in a dietary exposure bioassays. In an initial screening, an ethanolic extract from A. mucosa seeds (LC 50 = 1479 ppm) and Anosom Ò 1 EC (LC 50 = 1151 ppm) were the most promising treatments. In addition to acute toxicity, pronounced inhibition of H. armigera larval growth was observed in both treatments. Using chromatographic techniques, bioguided fractionations were conducted and the acetogenin bis-tetrahydrofuran rolliniastatin-1 was isolated as the primary compound from the most active fractions of A. mucosa. At a concentration of 41.55 ppm, rolliniastatin-1 caused total mortality of H. armigera larvae after the fourth day of exposure. In greenhouse trials, extract of A. mucosa (as an emulsifiable concentrate formulation) and the botanical insecticide based on extract of Annona squamosa L. (Anosom Ò 1 EC), both at LC 90 values previously estimated, were compared with a diamide-based commercial insecticide (flubendiamide 480 SC) for mortality after 168 h of exposure to larvae on tomato plants; all treatments caused high larval mortality ([90%). Thus, the results of this study indicate that the derivatives of Annonaceae are a useful alternative for the integrated management of H. armigera.
