“…Although some investigations (Bianchi 1990, Reis & Corrêa 1990, Silva & Bianchi 1992, Marziale & Rozestraten 1995 have suggested that Brazilian nurses' jobs are stressful, these results cannot be compared with this study because different methodologies were used with small samples, generally selected by nursing specialty. In addition, investigations of job satisfaction carried out in Brazil (dos Santos & Rodrigues Filho 1995, Antunes & Sant Anna 1996 have suggested a tendency for non-satisfaction among nurses, but in the same way the research models and small sample sizes make any meaningful comparison difficult.…”

“…Segundo Glima (16) , o estresse pode se agravar quanto menor for a autonomia do enfermeiro. A insatisfação no trabalho também pode influenciar no desenvolvimento das atividades diárias do enfermeiro, causar desânimo, falta de interesse e, por sua vez, gerar cada vez mais estresse (17) .…”

“…Basic counts in 2004 reported that approximately 92% of the total number of nurses in Brazil are female, which corroborates with the description of this profile. (6) The sample was considered young (80% were younger than 40 years old). This is the profile of nurses expected to work in this sector because, even during their undergraduate studies, they are encouraged to assist critical patients, those that require a longer period of care.…”
