“…A reversal in the global aging pyramid is currently underway, resulting in an increase in life expectancy and a reduction in birth rates, a process that is more intense in developing countries. The exponential increase in individuals aged 60 years or older, considered elderly, has resulted in a number of concerns and challenges for global health services [1][2][3] . It is projected that around 33.7% of the total population of Brazil will be considered elderly by 2060 4 .…”

“…Previous studies found several socio-demographic variables, including gender, that are associated with disability [11, 12, 14, 2027]. Older adults with multiple chronic diseases, poor self-assessed health conditions, and who practice sedentary life styles had high prevalence of functional disability [28]. The study by Tareque et al [12] found that socio-economic status as measured by a wealth index from household assets was significantly associated with disability among respondents aged 5 years and over.…”

In this study, the people with the greatest difficulties in instrumental activities of daily living were women, vulnerable elderly persons and those over 75 years of age, and so these groups should be a priority in social and health actions and strategies.…”

“…Studies have found that functional disability is associated with physical activity, nutritional status and the number of chronic noncommunicable diseases. Age also directly interferes with functional capacity, and every additional ten years lived increases the risk of functional decline approximately two fold, with elderly people aged 80 and over having a 25 times greater chance of decline in functional capacity than younger elderly persons 17,18 .…”
