Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between family management and asthma control in children with asthma. Design and Methods This cross‐sectional descriptive study recruited 142 children with asthma and their parents. We used the Family Management Measure (FaMM), the Childhood Asthma Control Test (C‐ACT), and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) detectors to assess family management and asthma control. The McNemar's test was used to determine the proportional difference between C‐ACT and FeNO in evaluating asthma control. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to assess the relationship between family management and asthma control in children with asthma. Results There was no significant difference in the proportion of C‐ACT and FeNO in evaluating asthma control (McNemar's test p = .593). Child's Daily Life, Condition Management Ability, and Parental Mutuality were positively correlated with C‐ACT (r = 0.398 to 0.655; all p < .05) and negatively correlated with FeNO (r = −0.245 to −0.402; all p < .05); Condition Management Effort, Family Life Difficulty, and View of Condition Impact were negatively correlated with C‐ACT (r = −0.416 to −0.672; all p < .05) and positively with FeNO (r = 0.248 to 0.427; all p < 0.05). Child's Daily Life, Condition Management Effort, and View of Condition Impact dimensions significantly predicted the C‐ACT results, and the Condition Management Effort and View of Condition Impact dimensions significantly predicted the FeNO results (p < .05). Practical Implications Pediatric nurses could provide family management education for parents to improve asthma control in children. In addition, pediatric nurses might assess asthma control condition of asthmatic children in combination with C‐ACT and FeNO levels.

Objective:To investigate the relationship of family management with sociodemographic and physical dependence aspects of children and adolescents with neurological impairment. Method:Descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted at a child neurology center. A non-probabilistic sample was obtained from 141 family members who answered two instruments: a) Sociodemographic condition of families; b) Family Management Measure. In the statistical analysis, we used the Spearman Coefficient and the Mann Whitney Test. Results:the longer the specialized care time, the lower the identity score (rs = - 0.209, p = 0.01); the higher the effort score (rs = 0.181, p = 0.03), the family difficulty score (rs = 0.239, p = 0.001) and the impact of the disease on family life (rs = 0.213, p = 0.01). The families of children and adolescents with physical dependence for activities of daily living presented a higher score in the following dimensions: management effort (<0.001), family difficulty (p = 0.004) and perception of disease impact (p = 0.001). Conclusion:There was evidence of a correlation between management with sociodemographic and child dependence aspects, with an association between management difficulty and longer time of child and adolescent care.

RESUMO: Objetivo analisar a relação entre o contexto de vida das famílias e a sua habilidade de manejo no cuidado às crianças em condições crônicas de saúde. Método estudo misto, do tipo paralelo convergente, tendo o Estilo de Manejo Familiar como quadro teórico. Participaram familiares de crianças com condições crônicas egressas de Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal do Sudeste do Brasil. Para a coleta de dados quantitativos, foram utilizados o instrumento Medida de Manejo Familiar e um questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica. Os dados quantitativos foram analisados por meio do programa estatístico Stata 15. Os dados qualitativos foram produzidos por meio de entrevista semiestruturada e submetidos à Análise de Conteúdo Dirigida. Resultados as famílias apresentaram um escore médio positivo na escala Habilidade de Manejo, possuindo maior facilidade para atender às necessidades de cuidado do filho com condição crônica no domicílio. Condições sociais e econômicas favoráveis contribuíram para a capacidade da família em cuidar da criança com condição crônica de saúde. Conclusões e implicações para a prática concluiu-se que há relação entre o contexto de vida das famílias e a habilidade de manejo da criança em condição crônica. Poder contar com o companheiro ou com outros membros da família pode melhorar a habilidade de manejo dessas famílias.
