A new species of Scinax Wagler, 1830 (Anura: Hylidae) from the middle Amazon river basin, Brazil

Abstract: A new species of the hylid genus Scinax is described and illustrated. The new taxon was found in the Amazonian rainforest of northern Brazil, municipalities of Maués and Careiro da Várzea, state of Amazonas. The new species is characterized by its moderate size (male mean snout-vent length 36.3 mm); body robust; large, orange, black-bordered axillary and inguinal spots; and bilobate vocal sac. This new species was found in primary and secondary forest on branches of shrubs or trees in, or next to, permanent po… Show more

“…Although there is no doubt about the validity of the name S . ruber [19], the strong variance in pairwise genetic distance between all OTUs in this clade plus S . ruber E (1% to 29%) suggests cryptic diversity [7, 66] [this study], as well as misidentification (perhaps for S .…”

“…Until 2014, 29 species of the Scinax ruber Clade ( sensu [18]) were known from Amazonia (see [19]). However, S .…”

“…Nevertheless, an increasing rate of new Scinax species recognition in the few last years (e.g., Fouquet et al 2007, Brusquetti et al 2014; Sturaro and Peloso 2014; Araujo-Vieira et al 2015; Araujo-Vieira et al 2016; Juncá et al 2015; Ferrão et al 2016) indicates that our knowledge of the actual species diversity in this genus is still very incomplete. Similarly, despite an intensive research in the last decades (e.g.…”

“…At present, 28 Scinax species are known to occur in Amazonia (see Sturaro and Peloso 2014, Brusquetti et al 2014). However, a surprisingly high Scinax species diversity was recently revealed in the rainforests covering the area of the Purus-Madeira Interfluve (PMI; Fig.…”

“…This richness is underestimated considering the taxonomic problems (Funk et al, 2011), the recent descriptions of species (e.g. Sturaro and Peloso, 2014) and taxonomic revisions (e.g. Maciel and Hoogmoed, 2011;Brcko et al, 2013).…”
