Updated and annotated checklist of recent mammals from Brazil

Abstract: An updated and annotated checklist of mammals occurring in Brazil is presented. A total of 751 native species, distributed in 249 genera, families and 11 orders were recorded to the country. The Brazilian mammalian fauna shows an elevated rate of endemism (30%; 223 species). Among the species evaluated by IUCN (668 species; 90%), a total of 80 (10.6% of total mammalian fauna) are Threatened, 28 (3.9%) are considered as Near Threatened, two species (0.3%) are presumable Extinct, 96 (12.8%) are considered with D… Show more

“…The number of mammalian species has increased through time; currently, more than 6,400 species are recognized worldwide, with the Neotropics considered as the third most species-dense biogeographic region (Burgin et al 2018;2019). Within this region, Brazil is the richest country, which might be related to its large area and environmental heterogeneity (Quintela et al 2020). This diverse country holds 759 native species, distributed in 249 genera, 51 families and 11 orders (Abreu et al 2020;Quintela et al 2020).…”

“…This originally vast biome (1.5 million km 2 ) is now reduced to only ~12% (~16,377,472 ha) of its original forest cover, most of which persists as highly fragmented areas smaller than 50-ha (Ribeiro et al, 2009). Over 300 species of mammals occur in the Atlantic Forest biome, with about 30% of the species being endemic (Paglia et al, 2012;Quintela et al, 2020). Although the Atlantic Forest's mammals are mostly arboreal (Paglia et al, 2012), the majority of studies which have focused on mammals larger than 1kg have been predominantly conducted using ground-based methods, such as transect census and terrestrial camera traps, along with indirect evidence obtained from vocalizations, tracks, faeces and carcasses (Chiarello, 2000;Srbek-Araujo & Chiarello, 2005;Oliveira et al, 2013;Geise et al, 2017).…”

“…The Brazilian Amazon is home to 409 mammal species with 248 species being exclusive for this biome; these species are mostly arboreal (55.7% excluding aerials) and occupy all the vertical strata (Paglia et al, 2012;Quintela et al, 2020). Regarding vertical strata, 40% to 70% of nonvolant mammalian biomass is represented in the canopy stratum (Eisenberg & Thorington, 1973).…”
