Introduction: In the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that heavy drinking causes serious harm not only to the person who drinks but also to the person's relations and concerned significant others (CSOs). A relationship with a heavy drinker is often full of conflicts, and CSOs are frequently exposed to aggression, psychological, and sometimes physical violence from the heavy drinker. Despite their struggles, CSOs often feel it is difficult to seek professional help for these problems. The aim of this study was to investigate what problems CSOs of people with alcohol problems experience prior to seeking professional help to handle these issues. Moreover, to investigate what led to seeking professional help at all. Methods: This is a qualitative study with 12 female help-seeking CSOs of persons with alcohol problems. The participants were recruited from a randomised controlled trial (RCT) on Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). Semi-structured interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, and transcribed. The analysis was based on interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: Three overall themes and one sub-theme emerged from the analysis: (1) The CSO’s feelings and experiences of the situation prior to help-seeking, (2) The relationship with the drinker, (3) Reasons for help-seeking and its trajectory; and the sub-theme, What the CSOs hoped to gain from help-seeking. Conclusion: The present study showed that female CSOs of people with alcohol problems had suffered for a long time before seeking professional help. They felt their daily lives were unpredictable and stressful. They were often exposed to verbal and mental abuse and their relationships with the drinking relative were often characterised by frequent rowing. The CSOs had tried to cope for a long time using a number of different strategies; seeking help seemed to be the last option considered. Despite all the struggles and pain, the CSOs also felt a lot of love for their drinking relative and hoped for the return of their once sober relative. Our findings can be viewed as a support to the stress-strain-coping-support (SSCS) model proposed by Orford and colleagues.

Objetivo: identificar as características sociodemográficas e de consumo de substâncias psicoativas de usuários internos em comunidades terapêuticas no interior do Vale do Araguaia, Brasil. Metodologia: trata-se de uma pesquisa transversal, cujos dados foram coletados através de um questionário semiestruturado, aplicados a usuários residentes em três Comunidades Terapêuticas que acolhem pessoas em situação de toxicodependência, destinadas ao público masculino. Resultados: foram entrevistados 37 internos, entre 19 e 70 anos, com média de 35,5 anos, solteiros, pardos, sem renda mensal, que cursaram até o ensino fundamental e com religião. O início do consumo de drogas foi majoritariamente entre os 12 e 17 anos, prevalecendo como primeira droga de uso o álcool, sendo que os motivos que levaram ao uso foram por curiosidade e para acompanhar amigos. O histórico familiar de uso foi prevalente, assim como o poliuso dessas substâncias, destacando o álcool e o crack como as substâncias que os levaram a dependência. Os indivíduos apresentaram consequências físicas e mentais do uso prolongado. A maioria dos entrevistados apresentaram um consumo de drogas diário antes de iniciar o tratamento. A procura pelo tratamento foi de forma voluntária ou a pedido dos familiares. Houve histórico de múltiplas internações, com destaque em serviço de comunidade terapêutica. Conclusão: torna-se necessário o desenvolvimento de estratégias de promoção e recuperação da saúde dos usuários que já se encontram em uso problemático de drogas, bem como a necessidade que se desenvolva ações de prevenção cada vez mais precoce entre a comunidade.Incluir o resumo.

Esse reconhecimento tardio está permeado pela negação, sendo comum entre as esposas o sentimento de culpa e de constrangimento (Nascimento, Lima, Hattori & Terças, 2019) e a busca por justificativas para os conflitos na convivência e para o consumo do álcool pelos companheiros (Lopes, et al, 2015). As relações de conflitos conjugais são recordadas pelas participantes por episódios de violências durante crises alcoólicas dos companheiros.…”

Introduction: Alcohol abuse is present in the family and conjugal life of many Brazilians, with the main drinker being the man. Living with alcoholics implies a breakdown in affective relationships, which can be experienced through violence and overload to women. Thus, this study aims to analyze the meaning of the memory of women living with an alcoholic partner. Method: This study is a qualitative, descriptive research, based on the Oral History of Life, carried out from April to October 2019, with five women spouses / ex spouses of alcoholics, in the interior of Bahia, Brazil. The experiences were collected through semi-structured interviews recorded and transcribed, analyzed through thematic content analysis. Results: Women's memories produced two thematic categories, The Past: challenges in conjugal coexistence; The Present: experience of resilience and empowerment. Women perceived their partners' alcohol dependence late, experiencing behavior changes in their partners, followed by experiences of domestic violence, resulting in impacts on their mental health. Religion was present in the moral options of life that guided women resilience and empowerment. Conclusions: It is noteworthy that women realized late that alcohol abuse contributed to their partner's aggressive behaviors. Thus, domestic violence suffered by women produced the appearance of signs of anxiety and depression. Finally, living with an alcoholic partner provided women with not only illness, but also contributed to resilience and empowerment in decision-making.
