Designing and using research questionnaires

Abstract: This article draws on experience in supervising new researchers, and the advice of other writers to offer novice researchers such as those engaged in study for a thesis, or in another small-scale research project, a pragmatic introduction to designing and using research questionnaires. Design/methodology/approach: After a brief introduction, this article is organized into three main sections: designing questionnaires, distributing questionnaires, and analysing and presenting questionnaire data. Within these se… Show more

“…Purposive sampling was used to derive the ideal population sample in the three geographical zones; this non-probability method offers the benefit of using a target sample that fits our research inquiry (Rowley, 2014;Teddlie & Yu, 2007). The interviews and discussions provided practical experience and realities of MSMEs in their daily activities.…”

“…This process also involves checking the data for respondent eligibility and consistency in classification. Field (2013) and Rowley (2014), emphasis that SPSS can help the researcher to check and verify data and to generate descriptive statistics and charts, graphs to describe and explore the data and also offers a range of statistics for exploring relationships between variables. All responses were deliberately coded in numerical form because data analysis was to be performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).…”

“…As the name implies, convenience sampling is a specific type of non-probability sampling method that relies on data collection from population numbers who are conveniently available to participate in the study. Researchers used sample cases that are accessible, such as certain organisations or certain members on social networking sites as their participants (Rowley, 2014). The advantages of convenience sampling are the simplicity of producing the sampling and ease of research, data collection can be facilitated in a short duration of time and with cost effectiveness.…”
