“…The C3, CFI, and C4BPα proteins may represent a plasma-based diagnostic biomarker panel, which could aid BD diagnosis or be used to monitor BD progression. Current research appears to support the view that plasma levels of C3 are elevated in MDD patients, while changes in C3 in BD is closely associated with the state of disease (Santos Sória et al, 2012 ), and there is also mounting evidence of the C4BPα and CFI levels being disturbed in several psychiatric disorders, elevated peripheral C4BP levels have been reported in Alzheimer’s disease (Trouw et al, 2008 ), and the mean level of CFI activity in autistic subjects suggesting that high CFI activity may have an impact on the development of autism (Momeni et al, 2012 ). These findings seem to suggest that the autoimmune system may provide promising biomarkers for psychiatry.…”

“…However, in a study reported by Akcan et al( 6 ) found that serum C4 levels were significantly reduced in chronic BD patients and the C4 mRNA expressions were elevated in a compensatory way. Furthermore, Santos and his colleagues failed to detect significant difference between HC and BD patients in euthymic state( 14 ). In spite of these conflict results, this would be understandable when considering the huge discrepancy of sample size and the subjects recruited.…”

“…Hakobyan et al showed that C3 hemolytic activity was 2.01-fold higher in SCZ patients than in healthy controls [32]. dos Santos Sória et al reported that C3 was significant higher in SCZ patients than in control subjects [33]. Nsaiba et al also demonstrated that C3 was increased in SCZ patients [34].…”
