Plants from Asteraceae family are widely used for their therapeutic effects in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, but the consequences of excessive intake still need to be studied. The aims of this study were the evaluation of cytotoxicity, measurement of antioxidant properties and determination of polyphenolic profile of Tanacetum vulgare L. (tansy), Achillea millefolium L. (yarrow) and Solidago gigantea Ait. (goldenrod) ethanolic extracts. The cytotoxicity of extracts was monitored by xCELLigence system in real time by using porcine intestinal epithelial cell line (IPEC-1) and by measurement of changes in metabolic activity ((3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) (MTS) assay). The antioxidant properties were measured by spectrophotometric methods and polyphenolic profiles were determined by HPLC-DAD for 50% ethanol extracts (10% w/v). Strong cytotoxic effect was recorded for tansy and yarrow extracts (125–1000 µg/mL) by xCELLigence system and MTS assay. Conversely, a supportive effect on cell proliferation was recorded for goldenrod extracts (125 µg/mL) by the same methods (p < 0.001). The antioxidant activity was in good correlation with total polyphenolic content, and the highest value was recorded for goldenrod leaves, followed by tansy leaves, goldenrod flowers and yarrow leaf extracts. The goldenrod extracts were abundant with flavonoids, whereas phenolic acid derivatives predominated in the polyphenolic profile of tansy and yarrow.

The impact of invasive species on the ecosystems belongs to the most important environmental problems. Representatives of the genus Solidago actively invade various plant communities. About 2300 literary sources were analyzed in order to determine the main tasks for the researchers of invasive species of this genus and to highlight the most relevant issues. Ambiguous evidence of the inhibitory effect of goldenrod on native flora species has been observed. Some studies report on the invasion of species of the genus Solidago and the displacement of species of local flora in various natural and climatic conditions. Opposite opinion states that the main changes relate not to taxonomic, but to the functional diversity. The allelopathic effect may be influenced both by edaphic factors and by the stage of plant development, as well as by the flora diversity in different regions and by the mutual influence of these factors. Most likely, essential oil components (terpenes and terpenoids) have an inhibitory effect on competing plants and soil microorganisms.

O câncer é um problema de saúde pública mundial e pesquisas têm apontado que o número de novos casos deve atingir 29,4 milhões até 2040. Além disso, o avanço desigual da doença causará maior impacto nos países de baixa e média renda. Nesse contexto, o avanço da doença associado aos efeitos adversos dos tratamentos empregados atualmente revela a urgência de avaliar métodos alternativos para combater o câncer. Com isso, o uso de plantas medicinais é desejável, por apresentarem menores contraindicações, graças ao baixo efeito antiproliferativo em tecidos saudáveis e elevada inibição para diversas linhagens tumorais. Sob a perspectiva brasileira, a bioprospecção de espécies vegetais é promissora, devido à elevada biodiversidade nacional. Com isso, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi de avaliar as vertentes da pesquisa na área de extração de compostos bioativos a partir de fontes vegetais, identificando as espécies, perfil fitoquímico e técnicas de extração mais utilizadas. Pode-se concluir que o uso de solventes orgânicos é massivo, o que prejudica o "scale-up" dos processos e pode inviabilizar o uso efetivo de fitoterápicos de plantas medicinais em escala industrial.
