Footwear, carpet, automotive interiors, and multilayer packaging are examples of products manufactured from several types of polymers whose inextricability poses substantial challenges for recycling at the end of life. Here, we show that chemical circularity in mixed-polymer recycling becomes possible by controlling the rates of depolymerization of polydiketoenamines (PDK) over several orders of magnitude through molecular engineering. Stepwise deconstruction of mixed-PDK composites, laminates, and assemblies is chemospecific, allowing a prescribed subset of monomers, fillers, and additives to be recovered under pristine condition at each stage of the recycling process. We provide a theoretical framework to understand PDK depolymerization via acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and experimentally validate trends predicted for the rate-limiting step. The control achieved by PDK resins in managing chemical and material entropy points to wide-ranging opportunities for pairing circular design with sustainable manufacturing.
We have obtained the first estimates of the masses of the components of the Her X-1/HZ Her X-ray binary system taking into account non-LTE effects in the formation of the H γ absorption line: m x = 1.8M ⊙ and m v = 2.5M ⊙ . These mass estimates were made in a Roche model based on the observed radial-velocity curve of the optical star, HZ Her. The masses for the X-ray pulsar and optical star obtained for an LTE model lie are m x = 0.85 ± 0.15M ⊙ and m v = 1.87 ± 0.13M ⊙ . These mass estimates for the components of Her X-1/HZ Her derived from the radial-velocity curve should be considered tentative. Further mass estimates from high-precision observations of the orbital variability of the absorption profiles in a non-LTE model for the atmosphere of the optical component should be made.
Abstract-We describe the results of a statistical approach to analyzing the combined radial-velocity curves of X-ray binaries with OB supergiants in a Roche model, both with and without allowance for the anisotropy of the stellar wind. We present new mass estimates for the X-ray pulsars in the close binary systems Cen X-3, LMC X-4, SMC X-1, 4U 1538-52, and Vela X-1. c 2004 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".
Using a 'scenario machine' we have carried out a population synthesis of radio pulsars with black hole binaries (BH+Psr) in the context of the most widespread assumptions concerning star mass loss during evolution, the mass ratio distribution of binary stars, the kick velocity and the envelope mass loss during collapse. Our purpose is to show that under any plausible parameters for the evolution scenario, the BH+Psr population should be abundant in the Galaxy. It is shown that in all models (including those evolved by Heger et al. and Woosley, Heger & Weaver), the expected number of black holes paired with radio pulsars is sufficient for such systems to be discovered within the next few years.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
