Internet-dependent behaviour in adolescents can contribute to a change in the function of the nervous system, which is reflected in the violation of time perception and autonomic regulation of the heart rate. The aim of the study was to determine groups of individuals with different risks of Internet addiction (IA) in relation to heart rate variability (HRV) parameters and the efficiency of time estimation in adolescents aged 16–17 years living in the Russian Arctic. Adolescents aged 16–17 years (n = 49–32 females, 17 males) living in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Russia) were observed. Chen Scale Internet Addiction (CIAS) was used. The duration of an individual 1 min was determined. HRV parameters were determined using the "Varicard" equipment (Russia). In 16–17-year-old adolescents with different levels of risk of developing IA, including signs of IA, we revealed a high severity of symptoms of withdrawal from Internet use, difficulty in time estimation against the background of sympathicotonia and a decrease in vagal regulation of heart rate. In individuals with minimal symptoms of withdrawal from Internet use, the total HRV and vagal activity remain higher than in those with severe withdrawal symptoms, and their time estimation remains effective.
The aim of the study was to assess different combinations of time estimation ability and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in adolescents during developing of Internet addiction (IA). The study included adolescents aged 16–17 (n = 49) living in the southern region of Russia. IA was measured using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS). An individual minute test (IM) was performed, and HRV was recorded. There are three groups that differ in HRV, IM duration and CIAS parameters. Minimal and moderate risk of IA development was detected against a background of a tendency towards vagotonia and prolonged IM time (Group I) and balanced autonomic nervous balance and optimal IM time (Group II). A balanced autonomic nervous balance and prolonged IM time were detected in the group of persons with a moderate risk of IA and a stable IA pattern (Group III). We assume that the development of IA in adolescents may be carried out by different neural mechanisms, including optimal autonomic nervous balance, but with primary impairment of cortical brain mechanisms of time perception.
This review demonstrates the effectiveness of short-term HRV biofeedback sessions in an evaluation of human adaptation to uncomfortable environments. A single HRV biofeedback session can be used as a test for the effectiveness of cortical-visceral connections in patients with cardiovascular disease. In addition, this method can be used as short-term assistance in adaptation to social stressful factors. (Int J Biomed. 2017;7(1):24-27.)
Objective. The aim was to determine the nature of cardiovascular reactions during a single session of heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback in order to increase vagal effects on heart rhythm in patients with different initial levels of blood pressure (BP). Participants and methods. 33 people with normal blood pressure (group I), 20 people with uncorrected arterial hypertension (AH) grade 1-2 (group II) and 22 people with AH grade 1-2 taking antihypertensive drugs (group III) were observed. The parameters of heart rate variability (HRV), BP and pulse oximetry in the initial stage, during a single HRV biofeedback session and after this session in order to increase the total power of the HRV spectrum (each stage was 5 min). Results. In patients of group II low success of HRV biofeedback session, a high sympathetic reactivity and reduced oxygen blood saturation were determined. A reactivity of vagal mechanism is more pronounced in persons of group III than in those of group II. It is reflected in a significant increase in their total power of the HRV spectrum compared to the initial values and in uptrend saturation levels during the biofeedback session. Conclusions. The ability to HRV biofeedback in order to increase the total power of the HRV spectrum for standard short recording (5 min) can be seen as a test to determine the safety reserves of vagal autonomic cardiovascular regulation in persons with increased blood pressure.
The character of the electroencephalogram (EEG) changes during a once procedure of heart rate variability biofeedback was considered in adolescents 14-17 years with different autonomic nervous types living in the different geographical latitudes and climatic, ecological conditions of the European North: the Subpolar (64°30' N) and Polar (67°40' N) areas. More intensive reduction of theta EEG activity (p < 0,05-0,001) with a predominance of the dynamics in the right brain hemisphere (p < 0,05), which continues to decline after the procedure occurs in adolescents of Polar region, especially in the group with a predominance of sympathetic influences on the heart activity. A common increasing of EEG alpha activity over all areas of the cerebral cortex (p < 0,05-0,001) with some displacement gradient in the front and center brain parts revealed in adolescents from all groups. A spectral power increment of beta1 EEG activity occur primarily at the expense of the front and right center-temporal brain parts (p < 0,05-0,001) in adolescents of both areas, but the biggest changes were found in persons with a balanced (normal) autonomic nervous tone (p < 0,05).
Background: The problem of maintaining body temperature in people working outdoors in the cold air of the Arctic remains relevant. The purpose of this study was to determine the autonomic nervous mechanisms of regulation of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and local immunity on the example of the dynamics of salivary lactoferrin during a decrease in body temperature in humans (the core and the skin of hands) during and after a short-term, whole-body exposure to cold air. Materials and Methods: A total of 15 healthy Russian male volunteers aged between18 and 20 years, born and living in Arkhangelsk, were examined in the winter. Research stages: the registration of indicators before exposure to the cold air (Stage 1), during the 10-minute exposure to the cold air at-20 °C (Stage 2) and after the 10-minute exposure to the cold air (Stage 3). The registration of indicators in Stages 1 and 3 was carried out indoors at an air temperature of +20 °C. HR (bpm), the heart rate variability (HRV) parameters, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BPsyst, BPdiast, mm Hg), salivary lactoferrin level (ng/ml) by ELISA and the body temperature in the ear canal (Tear, °C) and on the skin of the dorsum of the right hand (Tskin, °C) were determined at each stage of the study. Results: In Stage 2 with significantly decreased Tear and Tskin, compared to the initial indicators in Stage 1, there was a significant increase in HRV indices reflecting the overall HRV and vagal effects on the heart rhythm. At the same time, HR was significantly decreased, as well as stress index. An increase in the total power (TP) of the HRV spectrum was revealed due to a predominant increase in HF and VLF, and to a lesser degree in LF. Both BPsyst and BPdiast significantly increased. After cooling in Stage 3, HR increased, but remained significantly lower than the initial values. The overall HRV according to SDNN and TP decreased, reaching baseline values. Concentrations of salivary lactoferrin during cooling in Stage 2 tended to increase, which was also maintained in Step 3 after cooling. Correlation analysis in the entire sample (n=15) revealed a positive correlation between SDNN and Tear in Stage 2 (r s =0.56, P=0.035). In Stage 2, the change in Tskin was significantly correlated with the salivary lactoferrin level (r s =-0.73, P=0.003); this relationship was also found in Stage 3 (r s =-0.65, P=0.015). Conclusion: The successful return of body temperature after general cooling occurs under the condition of increasing the overall HRV, enhancing vagal influences on the heart rhythm, HF and VLF components of HRV during cooling. An increase in the level of salivary lactoferrin, while maintaining vagal reserves of the vegetative regulation of heart rhythm against a decrease in skin temperature during general cooling, as well as a decrease in the level of lactoferrin against the background of recovery of body temperature after cooling, at least 10 minutes, can be regarded as an adaptive response of the body to exposure to cold temperature with minimal ri...
