Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is one of the most difficult diseases in terms of pathogenesis, course and treatment. Although being rare, it is believed to be the most common benign laryngeal lesion in children and adults. Despite the advances made in surgery, worldwide RRP is considered a severe disease with high recurrence rates, risk of the fatal damage of the lower airway, and significant decrease in quality of life. It is now estimated that the severity of RRP clinical course mostly depends on the human papillomavirus (HPV) serotype. There are over 180 types of HPV. It is generally considered that serotypes 6 and 11 are responsible for most cases of RRP. At the same time literature reviews give data on other types of HPV aggressive against the larynx. However, considering the fact that the most authors did not adhere to a single study design, published results are often inconsistent. Age at disease onset and HPV strain are two commonly discussed potential predictors of increased disease severity.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
