Процессы цифровизации высшего образования и сопутствующие им научные и экспертные дискуссии начались задолго до начала пандемии COVID-19, однако тотальный переход на дистанционное обучение и удаленную работу университетов в 2020 г. актуализировал новый виток обсуждений того, как использование цифровых технологий меняет ландшафт высшей школы, а также роли и режимы работы академических профессионалов. В статье на материале серии полуструктурированных интервью с преподавателями 37 российских университетов, которые были собраны в два этапа с марта по апрель и в июне 2020 г., обсуждаются трансформации преподавательской профессии в условиях дистанционного форс-мажора. Ключевое внимание уделяется тому, что происходит с академической автономией в новых условиях, как меняются взаимоотношения между администрацией и преподавательским сообществом. Показывается, что в условиях «вынужденной дистанционки» намечаются два разнонаправленных тренда. С одной стороны, в условиях беспрецедентного натурального эксперимента по массовому переводу всех рабочих процессов в дистанционный формат возрождаются традиционные формы проявления академической автономии через самоорганизацию преподавательского сообщества, появление сетей кооперации и взаимной поддержки между академическими профессионалами. С другой стороны, преподаватели отмечают усиление административного контроля и бюрократизации образовательного процесса. В некоторых случаях это приводит к обострению конфликта между администрацией и преподавательским сообществом и воспринимается последним как угроза академической автономии. Таким образом актуализируются алармистские настроения в отношении академического труда и будущего академической профессии. Представленный анализ завершается обсуждением возможных мер, которые могут быть приняты для снижения потенциальных негативных эффектов выделенных трендов для всей системы высшего образования.
