Резюме. Цель. Дать оценку запасов и промысла водных биологических ресурсов западной части Среднего Каспия и перспективы использования их ресурсного потенциала. Методы. На основе анализа литературных источников и собственных данных о запасах и промысле водных биологических ресурсов западной части Среднего Каспия обсуждаются возможные причины возникающих экологических, хозяйственных и других проблем в использовании биологических ресурсов. Результаты. Главными негативными факторами являются масштабное браконьерство, повлекшее катастрофическое сокращение запасов осетровых и других ценных видов рыб Каспия, стихийное проникновение чужеродных организмов (гребневик мнемиопсис), перелов некоторых видов рыб. Потенциальную опасность представляет развернувшееся на Каспии, масштабное освоение нефтегазовых месторождений, что может привести к еще более худшей ситуации для биологических ресурсов моря. Выводы. В целях сохранения биологических ресурсов моря необходимо создать условия устойчиво растущего производства рыбопромысловых и рыбоперерабатывающих предприятий отрасли, обеспечивающих удовлетворение постоянного спроса на рыбную продукцию и рост доходной базы бюджета и благосостояния населения Российской Федерации. Проводились экспериментальные исследования по изучению влияния сырой нефти, газоконденсата (ГК), бурового раствора (БР) и бурового шлама (БШ) на зоопланктон (калянипеды), на растительные пигменты фитопланктона, на сапрофитную микрофлору, а также на представителей ихтиофауны Каспия.
