Το σημείο εκκίνησης της εργασίας ήταν η διερεύνηση της γνωστικής ανάπτυξης των παιδιών διαφορετικών τάξεων, κατά τη σχολική ηλικία, στη μαθηματική δεξιότητα της συλλογιστικής. Η συλλογιστική διακρίνεται σε αριθμητικά και οπτικοχωρικά ερεθίσματα, που προσδίδουν μία σχετικά πλήρη εικόνα για τη μαθηματική ικανότητα. Μελετήθηκε, επίσης, και η πιθανή συσχέτιση των δύο προαναφερθέντων ερεθισμάτων, ανά ηλικία, δηλαδή σχολική τάξη. Οι συμμετέχοντες/-ουσες αποτελούνταν από 2371 μαθητές και μαθήτριες σχολικής ηλικίας, όντας άριστοι ομιλητές/-ριες της ελληνικής γλώσσας, από όλες τις τάξεις του δημοτικού σχολείου, δημοσίων και ιδιωτικών, σε πανελλήνια κλίμακα. Το ερευνητικό εργαλείο που χορηγήθηκε είναι το «Τεστ Μαθηματικού Προφίλ & Δυσαριθμησίας» (MathPro Test) στο πλαίσιο στάθμισής του. Τα ευρήματα που προέκυψαν, από την μονοπαραγοντική ανάλυση διακύμανσης για την επίδραση της ηλικίας, ανέδειξαν στατιστικά σημαντικές διαφορές σχεδόν μεταξύ όλων των τάξεων, μερικές εκ των οποίων είχαν και υψηλό μέγεθος επίδρασης. Μη στατιστικά σημαντική διαφορά βρέθηκε μεταξύ της Ε΄ και Στ΄ τάξης στο σύνολο των δοκιμασιών. Ως προς τη πιθανή συσχέτιση των δύο ερεθισμάτων, εντοπίστηκαν μεσαίοι δείκτες συνάφειας μεταξύ σχεδόν όλων των οπτικοχωρικών και αριθμητικών ερεθισμάτων ανά τάξη. Τα ευρήματα συζητούνται σύμφωνα με διεθνή βιβλιογραφία σχετικά με τα μαθηματικά και τη συλλογιστική, ως προς και τα δύο είδη ερεθισμάτων και συνάμα τη σχέση αυτών.
