Cloud workflow scheduling is significantly challenging due to not only the large scale of workflow but also the elasticity and heterogeneity of cloud resources. Moreover, the pricing model of clouds makes the execution time and execution cost two critical issues in the scheduling. This paper models the cloud workflow scheduling as a multiobjective optimization problem that optimizes both execution time and execution cost. A novel multiobjective ant colony system based on a co-evolutionary multiple populations for multiple objectives framework is proposed, which adopts two colonies to deal with these two objectives, respectively. Moreover, the proposed approach incorporates with the following three novel designs to efficiently deal with the multiobjective challenges: 1) a new pheromone update rule based on a set of nondominated solutions from a global archive to guide each colony to search its optimization objective sufficiently; 2) a complementary heuristic strategy to avoid a colony only focusing on its corresponding single optimization objective, cooperating with the pheromone update rule to balance the search of both objectives; and 3) an elite study strategy to improve the solution quality of the global archive to help further approach the global Pareto front. Experimental simulations are conducted on five types of real-world scientific workflows and consider the properties of Amazon EC2 cloud platform. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than both some state-of-the-art multiobjective optimization approaches and the constrained optimization approaches.
Locating more peaks and refining the solution accuracy on the found peaks are two challenging issues in solving multimodal optimization problems (MMOPs). To deal with these two challenges, a distributed individuals differential evolution (DIDE) algorithm is proposed in this article based on a distributed individuals for multiple peaks (DIMP) framework and two novel mechanisms. First, the DIMP framework provides sufficient diversity by letting each individual act as a distributed unit to track a peak. Based on the DIMP framework, each individual uses a virtual population controlled by an adaptive range adjustment strategy to explore the search space sufficiently for locating a peak and then gradually approach it. Second, the two novel mechanisms named lifetime mechanism and elite learning mechanism (ELM) cooperate with the DIMP framework. The lifetime mechanism is inspired by the natural phenomenon that every organism will gradually age and has a limited lifespan. When an individual runs out of its lifetime and also has good fitness, it is regarded as an elite solution and will be added to an archive. Then the individual restarts a new lifetime, so as to bring further diversity to locate more peaks. The ELM is proposed to refine the accuracy of those elite solutions in the archive, being efficient in dealing with the solution accuracy issue on the found peaks. The experimental results on 20 multimodal benchmark test functions show that the proposed DIDE algorithm has generally better or competitive performance compared with the state-of-the-art multimodal optimization algorithms.
The airline crew rostering problem (CRP) is significant for balancing the workload of crew and for improving the satisfaction rate of crew's preferences, which is related to the fairness and satisfaction of crew. However, most existing work considers only one objective on fairness or satisfaction. In this study, we propose a new practical model for CRP that takes both fairness and satisfaction into account simultaneously. To solve the multi-objective CRP efficiently, we develop an ant colony system (ACS) algorithm based on the multiple populations for multiple objectives (MPMO) framework, termed multi-objective ACS (MOACS). The main contributions of MOACS lie in three aspects. Firstly, two ant colonies are utilized to optimize fairness and satisfaction objectives, respectively. Secondly, a new hybrid complementary heuristic strategy with three kinds of heuristic information schemes is proposed to avoid ant colonies focusing only on their own objectives. Ant colonies randomly choose one of the three schemes to help explore the Pareto front (PF) sufficiently. Thirdly, a local search strategy with two types of local search respectively for fairness and satisfaction is designed to further approach the global PF. The MOACS is applied to seven real-world monthly CRPs with different sizes from a major North-American airline. Experimental results show that MOACS generally outperforms the greedy algorithm and some other popular multi-objective optimization algorithms, especially on large-scale instances.
The job-shop scheduling problem (JSSP) is a challenging scheduling and optimization problem in the industry and engineering, which relates to the work efficiency and operational costs of factories. The completion time of all jobs is the most commonly considered optimization objective in the existing work. However, factories focus on both time and cost objectives, including completion time, total tardiness, advance time, production cost, and machine loss. Therefore, this article first time proposes a many-objective JSSP that considers all these five objectives to make the model more practical to reflect the various demands of factories. To optimize these five objectives simultaneously, a novel multiple populations for multiple objectives (MPMO) frameworkbased genetic algorithm (GA) approach, called MPMOGA, is proposed. First, MPMOGA employs five populations to optimize the five objectives, respectively. Second, to avoid each population only focusing on its corresponding single objective, an archive sharing technique (AST) is proposed to store the elite solutions collected from the five populations so that the populations can obtain optimization information about the other objectives from the archive. This way, MPMOGA can approximate different parts of the entire Pareto front (PF). Third, an archive update strategy
