Cutting off carbohydrate supply to longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) fruit by girdling and defoliation or by detachment induced 100% abscission within a few days. We used these treatments to study the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in fruit abscission. Girdling plus defoliation decreased sugar concentrations in the fruit and pedicel and depleted starch grains in the chloroplasts in the cells of abscission zone. Prior to the occurrence of intensive fruit abscission, there was a burst in ROS in the pedicel, which peaked at 1 day after treatment (DAT), when H2O2 in the abscission zone was found to be chiefly located along the plasma membrane (PM). H2O2 was found exclusively in the cell walls 2 DAT, almost disappeared 3 DAT, and reappeared in the mitochondria and cell walls 4 DAT. Signs of cell death such as cytoplasm breakdown were apparent from 3 DAT. The burst of ROS coincided with a sharp increase in the activity of PM-bound NADPH oxidase in the pedicel. At the same time, activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and peroxidase (POD) were all increased by the treatment and maintained higher than those in the control. Accompanying the reduction in H2O2 abundance, there was a sharp decrease in PM-bound NADPH oxidase activity after 1 DAT in the treated fruit. H2O2 scavenger dimethylthiourea (DMTU, 1 g L–1) significantly inhibited fruit abscission in detached fruit clusters and suppressed the increase in cellulase activity in the abscission zone. These results suggest that fruit abscission induced by carbohydrate stress is mediated by ROS. Roles of ROS in regulating fruit abscission were discussed in relation to its subcellular distribution.
To serve as an interconnect / gas separator in an SOFC stack, an alloy should demonstrate the ability to provide (i) bulk and surface stability against oxidation and corrosion during prolonged exposure to the fuel cell environment, (ii) thermal expansion compatibility with the other stack components, (iii) chemical compatibility with adjacent stack components, (iv) high electrical conductivity of the surface reaction products, (v) mechanical reliability and durability at cell exposure conditions, (vii) good manufacturability, processability and fabricability, and (viii) cost effectiveness. As the first step of this approach, a composition and property database was compiled for high temperature alloys in order to assist in determining which alloys offer the most promise for SOFC interconnect applications in terms of oxidation and corrosion resistance. The high temperature alloys of interest included Ni-, Fe-, Co-base superalloys, Cr-base alloys, and stainless steels. In the US alone, there are hundreds of commercial compositions produced, over 250 of which are listed in Appendix A. Two initial criteria (oxidation resistance and oxide scale electrical conductivity) were used to reduce the list of alloys to manageable proportions. Thermal expansion and fabrication characteristics were then considered to further reduce the list of stainless steels. Due to their outstanding oxidation resistance and their potential to be used in SOFC components that can exclude alumina scales from the stack electrical path, alloys with a sufficient amount of aluminum were classified into a separate alumina-forming alloy category. The down-selected compositions (approx. 130 in number) and their characteristics and/or applications are listed in the Selected Alloy Compositions tables (Appendix B). Following the down-selection of alloy compositions, materials properties of interest corresponding to the their functional requirements in SOFC stacks were compiled in a tabular form (Appendix C). For comparison, the properties of selected noble metals and intermetallics were also collected and compiled and are listed in a separate table in Appendix C. Analysis of the pertinent literature indicated that, for a wide variety of alloys, there remains a lack of information on specific materials properties. Also, we have observed a large scatter in the reported database. For those cases, we employed general alloying principles as a tool of choice to approximate the unavailable data and to evaluate the reliability and consistency of collected data. Though numerous high temperature alloys look promising, it is anticipated that there will be few, if any, "off the shelf" alloy compositions which could completely satisfy the materials requirements as an interconnect, especially for a long term in a specific SOFC design. Therefore, some concepts of alloy design, including composition, constitution, and structure, as well as their effects on properties relevant to SOFC applications, are elaborated in an attempt to provide guidance for modification of curren...
Rambutan is a popular tropical fruit known for its exotic appearance, has long flexible spines on shells, extraordinary aril growth, desirable nutrition, and a favorable taste. The genome of an elite rambutan cultivar Baoyan 7 was assembled into 328 Mb in 16 pseudo-chromosomes. Comparative genomics analysis between rambutan and lychee revealed that rambutan chromosomes 8 and 12 are collinear with lychee chromosome 1, which resulted in a chromosome fission event in rambutan (n = 16) or a fusion event in lychee (n = 15) after their divergence from a common ancestor 15.7 million years ago. Root development genes played a crucial role in spine development, such as endoplasmic reticulum pathway genes, jasmonic acid response genes, vascular bundle development genes, and K + transport genes. Aril development was regulated by D-class genes (STK and SHP1), plant hormone and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis genes, and sugar metabolism genes. The lower rate of male sterility of hermaphroditic flowers appears to be regulated by MYB24. Population genomic analyses revealed genes in selective sweeps during domestication that are related to fruit morphology and environment stress response. These findings enhance our understanding of spine and aril development and provide genomic resources for rambutan improvement.
The Nb3Sn thin film cavity, having the potential to be operated at a higher temperature and higher gradient compared to the cavity made from bulk niobium, is one of the most promising key technologies for the next-generation radio-frequency superconducting accelerators. In our work, several 1.3 GHz single-cell TESLA-shaped Nb3Sn thin film cavities, coated by the vapor diffusion method, were tested at Peking University and Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was observed that the performance of the Nb3Sn thin film cavities in the tests without the slow cooling down procedure and the effective magnetic field shielding was significantly improved by using a low temperature baking at 100 °C for 48 hours. Although the peak electric field of the cavity remained unchanged, the rapid drop of the unloaded Q value (Q 0) with the increasing accelerating field (Q-slope) was effectively eliminated, resulting in an improvement of the Q 0 in the intermediate field region by ∼ 8 times. Furthermore, under better test conditions with the shielded magnetic field less than 5 mG and the slow cooling down procedure in the temperature range of 25–15 K, the Q 0 was still improved by about 20%. Our study shows that the low temperature baking can be an effective supplement to the effective post-treatment for the Nb3Sn thin film cavity.
