Abstract:There is a large amount of remote sensing data available for land use and land cover (LULC) classification and thus optimizing selection of remote sensing variables is a great challenge. Although many methods such as Jeffreys-Matusita (JM) distance and random forests (RF) have been developed for this purpose, the existing methods ignore correlation and information duplication among remote sensing variables. In this study, a novel approach was proposed to improve the measures of potential class separability for the selection of remote sensing variables by taking into account correlations among the variables. The proposed method was examined with a total of thirteen spectral variables from a Gaofen-1 image, three class separability measures including JM distance, transformed divergence and B-distance and three classifiers including Bayesian discriminant (BD), Mahalanobis distance (MD) and RF for classification of six LULC types at the East Dongting Lake of Hunan, China. The results showed that (1) The proposed approach selected the first three spectral variables and resulted in statistically stable classification accuracies for three improved class separability measures. That is, the classification accuracies using three or more spectral variables statistically did not significantly differ from each other at a significant level of 0.05; (2) The statistically stable classification accuracies obtained by integrating MD and BD classifiers with the improved class separability measures were also statistically not significantly different from those by RF; (3) The numbers of the selected spectral variables using the improved class separability measures to create the statistically stable classification accuracies by MD and BD classifiers were much smaller than those from the original class separability measures and RF; and (4) Three original class separability measures and RF led to similar ranks of importance of the spectral variables, while the ranks achieved by the improved class separability measures were different due to the consideration of correlations among the variables. This indicated that the proposed method more effectively and quickly selected the spectral variables to produce the statistically stable classification accuracies compared with the original class separability measures and RF and thus improved the selection of the spectral variables for the classification.

Remote sensing technology is becoming mainstream for mapping the growing stem volume (GSV) and overcoming the shortage of traditional labor-consumed approaches. Naturally, the GSV estimation accuracy utilizing remote sensing imagery is highly related to the variable selection methods and algorithms. Thus, to reduce the uncertainty caused by variables and models, this paper proposes a combined strategy involving improved variable selection with the collinearity test and the secondary ensemble algorithm to obtain the optimally combined variables and extract a reliable GSV from several base models. Our study extracted four types of alternative variables from the Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-2A image datasets, including vegetation indices, spectral reflectance variables, backscattering coefficients, and texture features. Then, an improved variable selection criterion with the collinearity test was developed and evaluated based on machine learning algorithms (classification and regression trees (CART), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN)) considering the correlation between variables and GSV (with random forest (RF), distance correlation coefficient (DC), maximal information coefficient (MIC), and Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) as evaluation metrics), and the collinearity among the variables. Additionally, we proposed a secondary ensemble with an improved weighted average approach (IWA) to estimate the reliable forest GSV using the first ensemble models constructed by Bagging and AdaBoost. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed variable selection criterion efficiently obtained the optimal combined variable set without affecting the forest GSV mapping accuracy. Specifically, considering the first ensemble, the relative root mean square error (rRMSE) values ranged from 21.91% to 30.28% for Bagging and 23.33% to 31.49% for AdaBoost, respectively. After the secondary ensemble involving the IWA, the rRMSE values ranged from 18.89% to 21.34%. Furthermore, the variance of the GSV mapped by the secondary ensemble with various ranking methods was significantly reduced. The results prove that the proposed combined strategy has great potential to reduce the GSV mapping uncertainty imposed by current variable selection approaches and algorithms.

Unaffected by cloud cover and solar illumination, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images have great capability to map forest growing stem volume (GSV) in complex biophysical environments. Up to now, c-band dual-polarization Gaofen-3 (GF-3) SAR images, acquired by the first Chinese civilian satellite equipped with multi-polarized modes, are rarely applied in mapping forest GSV. To evaluate the capability of dual-polarization GF-3 SAR images in mapping forest GSV, several proposed derived features were initially extracted by mathematical operations and applied to obtain optimal feature sets by different feature sorting methods and feature selection methods. Then, the maps of GSV in an evergreen coniferous forest were inverted by various machine learning algorithms and stacking ensemble learning methods with different strategies. The results implied that backscattering coefficients and partially proposed derived features showed high sensitivity to the forest GSV, and the saturation phenomenon also obviously occurred once the forest GSV was larger than 300 m3/ha. Furthermore, the results showed that the accuracy of the mapped GSV was significantly improved using the stacking ensemble learning methods. Using various optimal feature sets and base models (MLR, KNN, SVM, and RF), the rRMSE values mainly ranged from 30% to 40%. After using the stacking ensemble learning methods, the values of rRMSE ranged from 16.71% to 20.51%. This confirmed that dual-polarization GF-3 images have great potential to map forest GSV in evergreen coniferous forests.
