Implementation of lightweight low-ductility materials such as aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys and composite materials has become urgently needed for automotive manufacturers to improve the competitiveness of their products. However, hybrid use of these materials poses big challenges to traditional joining process. Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is currently the most popular technique for joining dissimilar materials and has been widely used in joining all-aluminum and multimaterial vehicle bodies. However, in riveting magnesium alloys, cracks always occur for its low ductility. In this paper, a hybrid joining process named friction self-piercing riveting (F-SPR), which combines mechanical joining mechanism of SPR with solid-state joining mechanism of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) by making rivet rotating at high speed in riveting process, was proposed aiming at joining the low-ductility materials. The effectiveness of the F-SPR process was validated via riveting 1 mm thick AA6061-T6 and 2 mm thick AZ31B. The results showed that the F-SPR process could significantly improve the rivetability of magnesium alloys, and greatly increase the joint strength, comparing with the traditional SPR process.
Mechanical flexibility and advanced light management have gained great attentions in designing high performance, flexible thin film photovoltaics for the realization of building-integrated optoelectronic devices and portable energy sources. This study develops a soft thermal nanoimprint process for fabricating nanostructure decorated substrates integrated with amorphous silicon solar cells. Amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells have been constructed on nanoholes array textured polyimide (PI) substrates. It has been demonstrated that the nanostructures not only are beneficial to the mechanical flexibility improvement but also contribute to sunlight harvesting enhancement. The a-Si:H solar cells constructed on such nanopatterned substrates possess broadband-enhanced light absorption, high quantum efficiency and desirable power conversion efficiency (PCE) and still experience minimal PCE loss even bending around 180°. The PCE performance without antireflection coatings increases to 7.70% and it improves 40% compared with the planar devices. Although the advantages and feasibility of the schemes are demonstrated only in the application of a-Si:H solar cells, the ideas are able to extend to applications of other thin film photovoltaics and semiconductor devices.

The need to accurately measure the mechanical properties of freestanding thin films such as carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposite thin films and various buckypaper is increasingly urgent. This paper presents the design and control of a novel compliant tensile testing module based on buckled fixedguided beams aimed at accurately measuring the mechanical properties of free-standing thin films. The piezoelectric stack actuator that can provide high resolution for the output displacement is chosen to actuate the tensile testing module. The advantages of the module are its compactness, no friction, no wear, low cost and good repeatability. The performance is further evaluated by the established analytical model using the elliptic integral approach and the nonlinear finite-element analysis (FEA). A metal prototype of the tensile testing design has been fabricated and the performance of the fabricated prototype is investigated through open-loop displacement response experiments. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ideas for the mechanism. The design holds great potential applications in measuring mechanical properties of free-standing thin-film materials such as carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposite thin films and various buckypaper as well as other freestanding thin-film materials.
