In this study, we examine how the relationship between the level of strategic change in the pattern of resource allocation and firm performance differs between firms led by outside CEOs and those led by inside CEOs. Based on longitudinal data on the tenure histories of 193 CEOs who left office between 1993 and 1998, we find that the level of strategic change has an inverted U‐shaped relationship with firm performance. As the level of change increases from slight to moderate, performance increases; as the level of change increases from moderate to great, performance declines. Further, we find that this inverted U‐shaped relationship differs between firms led by outside CEOs and those led by inside CEOs. That is, both the positive effect of strategic change on firm performance when the level of change is relatively low and the negative effect of strategic change on firm performance when the level of change is relatively high are more pronounced for outside CEOs than for inside CEOs. Supplementary analyses also suggest that this difference between outside and inside CEOs exists in later years but not in the early years of CEO tenure. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death among females in less developed countries. Studies have shown that the single-nucleotide polymorphisms of interleukin 6 might be associated with cervical cancer risk. A total of 710 articles from EMBASE, EBSCO, Web of science, PubMed, Springer link, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were reviewed in our study. A meta-analysis on the associations between interleukin 6 rs1800795 polymorphism and cervical cancer risk was carried out by comparison using 5 genetic models. In this systematic review, 5 studies were analyzed. The pooled population included 2735 participants (1210 cases and 1525 controls). The overall odds ratio (G vs C alleles) using fixed-effects model was 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.75-0.97), P ¼ .02. Our results show that the C genotype of interleukin 6 rs1800795 is associated with higher cervical cancer risk. Our results indicate that interleukin 6 rs1800795 polymorphism might be associated with susceptibility to cervical cancer.

Using 1992-2014 data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the present study examines the nature and characteristics of hate crimes against Asian Americans by comparing them with those of hate crimes against African Americans and Hispanics. Minority-general and minority-specific models are proposed to guide the analysis. The findings are mixed. The analyses of all victim-related and most offender-related variables show similarities of hate crimes against Asian Americans to those against African Americans and Hispanics. These findings provide support for the minority-general model. Offenders' race and all incident-related variables of hate crimes against Asian Americans, however, differ significantly from those of hate crimes against African Americans and Hispanics. These significant differences provide support for the minority-specific model.

Corruption is a growing global epidemic. Our understanding of its causes is limited. Combining data from several sources, the current article tests the validity of social support theory in explaining corruption in an integrated structural model. The findings support our theoretical speculation: our social support measure is a strong predictor of corruption in the model. In addition, undemocratic governments with inadequate checks and balances indirectly contribute to the high level of corruption in a nation. Democracy promotes human development and bolsters social support for citizens' wellbeing, both of which reduce the level of corruption in a nation. Inequality fosters corruption indirectly through reduced human development and reduced social support. We conclude that criminologists need not await the determinations of international legal systems to study scathing behavior, such as corruption.
