Robust estimates of absolute abundance are vital for management of threatened species, but these have rarely been generated for endangered South Asian river dolphins due to methodological challenges. An estimate of abundance for the Indus River dolphin in 2006 was generated by conducting tandem vessel-based direct counts; conditional likelihood capture-recapture models were then used to correct for missed animals. Group size and sighting conditions were included as covariates, and abundances of the 3 largest subpopulations were estimated as 101 (coefficient of variation, CV = 44.1%) between Chashma and Taunsa barrages, 52 (CV = 14.9%) between Taunsa barrage and Ghazi Ghat, and 1289 (CV = 33.4%) between Guddu and Sukkur barrages. A total of 75.3% of groups were seen by both independent survey teams, and single animals were almost 5 times more likely to be missed than groups of 3 or more. Providing groups can be matched with minimal error, this survey method shows good potential for abundance estimation of dolphins in confined habitat and the shallow rivers of South Asia. Dolphin encounter rates within the Guddu-Sukkur subpopulation (10.35 km −1 ) are the highest reported for any river dolphin. Direct counts conducted over a 35 yr period, suggest that this subpopulation may have been increasing in abundance, probably due to the cessation of hunting and possible immigration from other subpopulations. The future of South Asian river dolphins is intimately tied to water security in the region, and escalating and competing demands for freshwater mean that the long-term future of South Asia's river dolphins is uncertain.
We conducted questionnaire based interviews (n = 1873) of respondents coming from 258 localities about bear tracts in northern parts of Pakistan in 2012-2014 to study Himalyan brown (U. arctos isalbellinus) and Himalayan black (U. t. laniger) bears. Brown bears were more frequent in northern latitudes (northern Chitral, Ghizer, Gilgit and Skardu), while black bears were widely distributed in southern latitudes (Battagram). Both brown and black bears are present in central latitudes (Astor, Diamir, Kohistan and Mansehra). We identified 34 populations of brown bears; a large population in the Deosai Plateau and small to very small populations in other localities. We identified 9 isolated meta-populations sharing common gene pools; 7 (Bomborat, Gias, Chowgram, Laspur-Malkov, Koshi-Palas, Phunder-Yasin, Khunjerab) very small with serious inbreeding and threat of extinction, while Deosai and Diamir-Astor populations were large but were expected to have a high level inbreeding. Black bears were present in 45 localities; larger populations in three localities of Battagram (Nagram, Rahing and Shamli). We identified 6 meta-populations of black bears; Kohistan-Batagram-Mansehra, Diamir-Astor and south Chitral meta-populations were large; but 3 other populations (Thack, Hisper-Minipin and Chasma) were small/very small, possibly having high inbreeding. Bears raid standing maize crops (regular and severe in 2 localities and irregular and severe in 6) and fruit (apricot, grape, mulberry and walnut). Average annual bears depredation of 54 cattle, 188 goat/sheep, 4 yaks, and 9 horses/donkeys/mules were reported, inflicting an economic loss of Pak Rs. 2,840,000 (US$ 28,400) to the livestock farming community. Respondents reported 4 incidences of bear attack (1 killed, 3 injured) and 2 cases of cub poaching during 2013.
Pakistan possesses the most varied and widely distributed network of wetlands. The study area spanned across Kikar post to head Marala at river Jammu Tawi from Kalyal to head Marala at river Chenab and from Rangpur Kuri to head Marala at river Manawar Tawi. Total count of the livestock (resting grazing) population was taken during each calendar month of the year, i.e., from October, 2000 to September 2001. The results of the survey confirmed the presence of 6 common species of livestock i.e. sheep, goat, buffaloes, cows, donkeys and horses in the study area in different sizes of populations.
Zooplanktons are important fish and waterfowl food. Limnological studies of Marala Wetlands, a complex created by three rivers, i.e., Jammu Tawi, Chenab and Manawar Tawi, entering Bajwat area located 25 km from North of Sialkot city from state of Jammu and Kashmir, were carried out between October, 2000 to September 2001. This survey was carried out to create a checklist of zooplanktons existing in the study site which would help in future studies relating to aquatic biodiversity and ecological studies of wetlands. A minimum of 25 species of zooplanktons were present in the wetland area, which can be included into 4 major animal groups. Amoeba, Paramecium, Opalina and Euglena were the dominant species. Crustaceans were represented by Daphnia, Moina, Cyclops. Insects observed at river Jammu included mosquito larvae, water spider and dragonflies of unidentified species. The Maximum number of zooplanktons were recorded in March, April, May & then in September and October as observed throughout study period.
Freshwater wetlands are individual ecosystems that support a variety of wildlife, vegetation and microscopic life. The type of plants that exist in these areas describe the physico-chemical characteristics of their locality and vice-versa. This study was carried out at Marala wetlands in Bajwat Game Reserve. The study found 39 species of higher plants in the areas of the wetland and its associated terrain. The total species were arranged into 5 vegetation types, named on the basis of the dominant plant species, with their own composition of the species and present in different habitat conditions. The vegetative community Phragmites karka constituted an association of 8 plant species; Juncellus laevigatus had 10, Typha angustata had 13, Aeluropus lagopoides and Cyprus comylomeratus had 9 species each.
