The theories of social capital and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale were used to measure the campus life satisfaction of college students, this paper made an empirical analysis on the WeChat media use of 1000 college students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and mainland China (M=18.81 years old, SD=0.96) of a University in Guangdong province, and discussed the relationship among college students' social media use intensity, campus life satisfaction and social capital. The study found that there was a significant positive correlation between WeChat use intensity of college students and social capital, that the intensity of WeChat use had a direct effect on college students' satisfaction with campus life, and that self-esteem had a moderating effect between WeChat use intensity and social capital.Taking WeChat as the representative, social media has been embedded into all aspects of mass interpersonal communication and social participation. It not only has the function of information transmission and communication media, but also integrates functions beyond mass media and interpersonal communication media. At present, the research on WeChat communication for teenagers mainly focuses on communication, psychology and pedagogy, focusing on the network media literacy of college students, the characteristics of college students ' circle of friends, the information disclosure and privacy rights of WeChat Moments, the network ethics and so on. And the relationship between WeChat use of college students and campus life satisfaction is rarely seen in the research field. Based on the theoretical perspective of social capital, this study takes WeChat use as the research background and rosenberg self-esteem scale as the measurement, and explores the relationship between WeChat use of college students and campus life satisfaction with the method of empirical research. By aiming at the survey data of students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and mainland China in a University located in Guangdong, it is concluded that the regression analysis (N = 983, effective recovery rate is 98.3%) showed that there is a strong correlation between WeChat use and three types of social capital, and is most closely related with the Bridging social capital. In addition, WeChat use had certain interaction with the mental health of college students, suggesting that social media helps college students with low self-esteem integrate into college life.
Purpose Extensively public concern on “Huge Executive Compensation” makes it urgent to investigate the reasonability of high executive compensation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of compensation contracting based on the specific responsibility of executives. More specifically, this paper is to examine whether high compensation is helpful to mitigate agency problems. Design/methodology/approach Considering that board secretaries of listed companies are responsible for information disclosure in China, this paper examines the effect of board secretaries’ excess compensation on firms’ disclosure quality using listed company data from 2007 to 2015. The first measure of disclosure quality is based on the disclosure violation behavior of firms, and the second is KV value that represents the extent to which the investors relay on the stock trading volume. To provide additional confidence that the findings are robust, this paper further conducts two indirect tests based on rumors and cost of equity capital. Findings The results show that board secretaries’ excess compensation is negatively associated with the probability of information disclosure violation and also negatively associated with firms’ KV value, suggesting firms that pay high compensation to their information providers are more likely to provide high-quality disclosures. Besides, this paper further finds that board secretaries’ excess compensation is negatively related to the incidence of rumors, the number of rumors incurred or the cost of equity capital. Research limitations/implications Overall, the findings provide support to the efficient contracting of executive compensation, which implies that highly paid board secretaries would be better information providers than those poorly paid. Practical implications This paper provides empirical evidence that firms’ disclosure quality can be improved by modifying the compensation contract of information providers. This may indicate a new way to improve the quality of disclosures, so as to mitigate the agency problem. Social implications In spite of the public criticism on executive excess compensation, the high compensation is not always a signal of manipulation, collusion and self-interest. It also can be a signal of individual talents and great efforts. Board secretaries are worth to be highly paid if they can improve firms’ disclosures, thereby reducing the incidence of rumors and reducing the cost of equity capital. Originality/value This paper is the first research to examine the effectiveness of compensation contracting based on information providers’ disclosure responsibility in the Chinese context. It documents a positive relation between board secretaries’ excess compensation and corporate disclosure quality.
Although musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) represent an important occupational issue worldwide, surprisingly few investigations have been conducted among white-collar workers in Mainland China. The current study examined MSD and their after-effects among 334 health professionals in Beijing, by means of an anonymous questionnaire (response rate: 99.4%). Of the respondents, 92.2% reported an MSD occurring in the previous 12 months, with the neck (72.2%), shoulder and lower back (59.9% each) being the most commonly affected body sites. Fifty-six percent of all MSD had persisted > 24 hours, 23.0% had interfered with their work ability and 15.9% required medical treatment. MSD of the hand/wrist and MSD of the shoulders were the most likely to last > 24 hours. MSD of the lower back, upper legs or hand/wrist were all associated with a reduction of work ability. Medical treatment was more likely to have been sought for MSD of the lower back or knees, when compared to other body sites. Females were five times more likely to report an MSD at any body site, while tobacco smokers were three times more likely to have sought medical treatment for an MSD. Overall, this study suggests that MSD are becoming an increasingly important cause of functional disability among white-collar workers in China. As some significant correlations were found during statistical analysis, further research should now investigate the complicity of various factors on MSD development within this emerging Chinese demographic.
