The low limit of the deposition temperature for atomic layer deposition (ALD) of noble metals has been studied. Two approaches were taken; using pure oxygen instead of air and using a noble metal starting surface instead of Al2O3. Platinum thin films were obtained by ALD from MeCpPtMe3 and pure oxygen at deposition temperature as low as 200 °C, which is significantly lower than the low-temperature limit of300 °C previously reported for the platinum ALD process in which air was used as the oxygen source. The platinum films grown in this study had smooth surfaces, adhered well to the substrate, and had low impurity contents. ALD of ruthenium, on the other hand, took place at lower deposition temperatures on an iridium seed layer than on an Al2O3 layer. On iridium surface, ruthenium films were obtained from RuCp2 and oxygen at 225 °C and from Ru(thd)3 and oxygen at 250 °C, whereas no films were obtained on Al2O3 at temperatures lower than 275 and 325 °C, respectively. The crystal orientation of the ruthenium films was found to depend on the precursor. ALD of palladium from a palladium β-ketoiminate precursor and oxygen at 250 and 275 °C was also studied. However, the film-growth rate did not saturate to a constant level when the precursor pulse times were increased.

Vascular leakage, one hallmark of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome, has been linked to the mediators secreted from cells in the circulatory system. In this study, extremely high expression levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) were found in the plasma of DHF patients compared with low MCP-1 expression levels in the plasma of enterovirus 71-infected patients. It was also found that MCP-1 expression was induced in dengue virus 2 (DV2)-infected monocytes and lymphocytes, but not in liver or endothelial cells. Exposing monolayers of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to recombinant human MCP-1 (rhMCP-1) or to the culture supernatant of DV2-infected human monocytes increased the vascular permeability of the cells. MCP-1-neutralizing monoclonal antibody only partially prevented monolayer permeability change. Consistently, the distribution of the tight junction protein ZO-1 on the cellular membranes of HUVECs was disrupted by rhMCP-1 or by the conditioned medium of DV2-infected monocytes. In summary, it was found that the increased permeability and disrupted tight junctions of human vascular endothelium cells were effected through a mechanism partially dependent on MCP-1, which was secreted by DV2-infected monocytes and lymphocytes.

We report the development of Co9S8 nanocrystals as a cost-effective cathode material that can be readily combined with spraying techniques to fabricate large-area dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) devices and can be further connected with series or parallel cell architectures to obtain a relatively high output voltage or current. A gram-scale synthesis of Co9S8 nanocrystal is carried out via a noninjection reaction by mixing anhydrous CoCl2 with trioctylphosphine (TOP), dodecanethiol and oleylamine (OLA) at 250 °C. The Co9S8 nanocrystals possess excellent catalytic ability with respect to I(-)/I3(-) redox reactions. The Co9S8 nanocrystals are prepared as nanoinks to fabricate uniform, crack-free Co9S8 thin films on different substrates by using a spray deposition technique. These Co9S8 films are used as counter electrodes assembled with dye-adsorbed TiO2 photoanodes to fabricate DSSC devices having a working area of 2 cm(2) and an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.02 ± 0.18% under AM 1.5 solar illumination, which is comparable with the PCE of 7.2 ± 0.12% obtained using a Pt cathode. Furthermore, six 2 cm(2)-sized DSSC devices connected in series output an open-circuit voltage of 4.2 V that can power a wide range of electronic devices such as LED arrays and can charge commercial lithium ion batteries.

This study reports synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles for fabricating the TiO2 nanocrystalline films used in dye-sensitized solar cells: phase-pure anatase nanoparticles from a titanate-directed route, and brookite (27%) and rutile (1.2%)-containing anatase nanoparticles from a sol−gel route. After nanoparticle-necking into films, X-ray diffraction pattern simulation shows that the defect density of the anatase (AN) films is less than that of the brookite/rutile-containing anatase (AN-br) films. The defect states in the AN-br films lower the short circuit current and conversion efficiency of the resulting solar cells. Intensity-modulated photocurrent/photovoltage spectroscopic analysis demonstrates electron transport in trap-free and trap-limited diffusion modes and shows that the defects serve as electron trap state to retard electron transport for collection and increase the traveling time prior to recombination. Impedance analysis shows that the trap-free mode extends the electron diffusion length in TiO2 films and its contribution magnitude governs the electron collecting efficiency.
