A significant proportion of children's daily energy intake is consumed during television viewing, and the consumption of high-fat foods on weekends may be associated with BMI in younger children.
A land-use-change simulation model (LEAM) and a non-point-source (NPS) water quality model (L-THIA) were closely coupled as LEAMwq in order to determine the long-term implications of various degree of urbanization on NPS total nitrogen (TN), total suspended particles (TSP), and total phosphorus (TP) loads. A future land-use projection in the St. Louis metropolitan area from 2005 to 2030 using three economic growth scenarios (base, low, and high) and a long-term precipitation dataset were used to predict the mean annual surface runoff and mean annual NPS pollutant loads in the region. Results show mean annual TN increases of 0.21%, 0.13%, and 0.14% by 2030 compared to 2000 under the base, high, and low scenarios, respectively. TSP and TP showed similar trends with different magnitudes. Corresponding changes in annual mean surface runoff were shown to be lower than expected, which might be attributed to the small-scale conversion pattern of land uses. In the most dramatic change (high growth) scenario, the runoff would increase across time but at varying rates, and temporal pollutant loads would result in a more complicated pattern than in the other scenarios. This is attributed to the complex interactions between event mean concentrations of pollutants and the magnitude of changes in land-use acre-ages. By integrating L-THIA with LEAM, LEAMwq was found to be a useful planning tool to illustrate in a quick and simple manner how future water quality is connected to decision-making on future land-use change.
Essential oils are widely used in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries, and many plant essential oils have shown that they have positive effects on broilers nutrition. This experiment was conducted to study the effects of orally administered different dosages of carvacrol essential oils on intestinal barrier function in broiler chickens. A total of eighty 28-day-old (1.28 ± 0.15 kg) ROSS 308 broilers were randomly allocated to four groups of 20 replicates each, with one chicken per replicate per cage, and all were fed with the same diet. Four experimental groups were orally administered 0, 200, 300 or 400 μl carvacrol essential oils at 18:00 hr every day during the 2-week experimental period. As a result of which, the gene expression of the occludin, claudin-1, claudin-5, ZO-1 and ZO-2 in intestinal mucosa of small intestine (p < 0.05) and the goblet cell content in small intestine epithelium (p < 0.05) were significantly increased; test subjects with 300 or 400 μl carvacrol essential oils reduced the microbial counts of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in the intestines (p < 0.05); Essential oils administration also significantly increased activity of the sucrase (p < 0.05) and lactase (p < 0.05) in intestinal mucosa. In conclusion, the carvacrol essential oils have positive effects on growth performance and intestinal barriers function of broilers; those effects may be related to the dosage, as administration of 300 or 400 μl was more effective than that of 200 μl.
Lanzhou lily (Liliumdavidii var. unicolor) is the best edible lily as well as a traditional medicinal plant in China. The microbes associated with plant roots play crucial roles in plant growth and health. However, little is known about the differences of rhizosphere microbes between healthy and wilted Lanzhou lily (Lilium davidii var. unicolor) plants. The objective of this study was to compare the rhizosphere microbial community and functional diversity of healthy and wilted plants, and to identify potential biocontrol agents with significant effect. Paired end Illumina Mi-Seq sequencing of 16S rRNA and ITS gene amplicons was employed to study the bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil of Lanzhou lily plants. BIOLOG technology was adopted to investigate the microbial functional diversity. Our results indicated that there were major differences in the rhizosphere microbial composition and functional diversity of wilted samples compared with healthy samples. Healthy Lanzhou lily plants exhibited lower rhizosphere-associated bacterial diversity than diseased plants, whereas fungi exhibited the opposite trend. The dominant phyla in both the healthy and wilted samples were Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, i.e., 34.45 and 64.01 %, respectively. The microbial functional diversity was suppressed in wilted soil samples. Besides Fusarium, the higher relative abundances of Rhizoctonia, Verticillium, Penicillium, and Ilyonectria (Neonectria) in the wilted samples suggest they may pathogenetic root rot fungi. The high relative abundances of Bacillus in Firmicutes in healthy samples may have significant roles as biological control agents against soilborne pathogens. This is the first study to find evidence of major differences between the microbial communities in the rhizospheric soil of healthy and wilted Lanzhou lily, which may be linked to the health status of plants.
Buckwheat‐resistant starch (BRS) has shown to be a nutrient capable of lowering cholesterol and reducing obesity. In this study, the regulatory effects of tartary buckwheat starch on blood lipid level and gut microbiota (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, and Escherichia coli) in mice fed with a high‐fat diet was investigated. Male C57BL/6 mice were separately fed with a normal diet (CON), a high‐fat diet (HFD), and high‐fat diet supplemented with buckwheat‐resistant starch (HFD+BRS) for 6 weeks. After the feedings, lipid profile, blood glucose, plasma levels of cytokines, short‐chain fatty acid content in the colon and intestinal flora of fecal were measured. Furthermore, the antioxidant indices of the liver and duodenum tissues were measured to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of mice. Significantly reduced plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), glucose, and cytokines were observed in the HFD+BRS group, accompanied by an increased antioxidant capacity in the liver and duodenum. In addition, supplementation with BRS significantly inhibited the increase in plasma lipopolysaccharide, tumor necrosis factor‐α, and interleukin‐6 levels. Gut microbiota composition was regulated by the supplement of BRS, which promoted the growth of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Enterococcus, as well as inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli. In contrast to the HFD group, the content of short‐chain fatty acids in mice colon increased in the BRS group. In conclusion, BRS benefited the cholesterol and glucose metabolism, as well as optimized gut microbiota composition in mice fed with a high‐fat diet.
Practical Application
This study identified the beneficial effects of tartary buckwheat‐resistant starch on the regulation of blood lipids and intestinal flora in mice fed a high‐fat diet. The result of this study will provide a basis for the development of probiotic products supplemented with tartary buckwheat‐resistant starch and direction for further research.
