Background:Nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (NONFH) is a debilitating disease that represents a significant financial burden for both individuals and healthcare systems. Despite its significance, however, its prevalence in the Chinese general population remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of NONFH and its associated risk factors in the Chinese population.Methods:A nationally representative survey of 30,030 respondents was undertaken from June 2012 to August 2013. All participants underwent a questionnaire investigation, physical examination of hip, and bilateral hip joint X-ray and/or magnetic resonance imaging examination. Blood samples were taken after overnight fasting to test serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. We then used multivariate logistic regression analysis to investigate the associations between various metabolic, demographic, and lifestyle-related variables and NONFH.Results:NONFH was diagnosed in 218 subjects (0.725%) and the estimated NONFH cases were 8.12 million among Chinese people aged 15 years and over. The prevalence of NONFH was significantly higher in males than in females (1.02% vs. 0.51%, χ2 = 24.997, P < 0.001). Among NONFH patients, North residents were subjected to higher prevalence of NONFH than that of South residents (0.85% vs. 0.61%, χ2 = 5.847, P = 0.016). Our multivariate regression analysis showed that high blood levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and non-HDL-cholesterol, male, urban residence, family history of osteonecrosis of the femoral head, heavy smoking, alcohol abuse and glucocorticoid intake, overweight, and obesity were all significantly associated with an increased risk of NONFH.Conclusions:Our findings highlight that NONFH is a significant public health challenge in China and underscore the need for policy measures on the national level. Furthermore, NONFH shares a number of risk factors with atherosclerosis.

A mobile cloudlet is a set of resource-rich mobile devices-referred to as cloudlet nodes-that an initiator mobile device can connect to for services. In this paper, we examine the fundamental mobile cloudlet properties that unfold whether and when a mobile cloudlet can provide mobile application service. Specifically, we investigate the cloudlet size, cloudlet node's lifetime and reachable time. Traces and mathematical analysis demonstrate that 1) the more frequently mobile devices meet, the larger the pool of computing resources an initiator can access; 2) intermittent connection between devices has little adverse effect on the optimal computing performance of mobile cloudlet in the long run; 3) the ratio E(TC )/[E(TI ) + E(TC )] indicates the connection likelihood of an initiator and a cloudlet node (i.e., reachability of the cloudlet node), where TC and TI are their contact and inter-contact time. We further derive upper and lower bounds on computing capacity and computing speed of a mobile cloudlet. An initiator can use both bounds to decide whether to offload its task to remote clouds or local mobile cloudlets for better mobile application services.

Revegetation has been the primary management approach for solving the problems caused by severe soil erosion in the Loess Plateau. The objectives of this work were to explore the successional trajectory of the different types of restoration and discuss their potential effectiveness for the control of soil erosion. The presence and coverage of plants in 40 permanent plots were investigated during two periods (2003-2006 and 2013). The naturally and artificially revegetated communities studied in the two surveys were classified using two-way indicator species analysis, and their relationships were analyzed using detrended correspondence analysis. Under natural revegetation, the communities succeed in the following order: annual plants → perennial plants → short rhizome tufts and subshrubs. Under artificial revegetation, succession was interrupted by artificial planting, and a Gramineae herb layer persisted through the years with few changes in species composition. Additionally, species richness, diversity, and evenness increased, while ecological dominance decreased during succession in both revegetation types. Succession rate was rapid at the initial stage and then slowed down gradually. Succession followed different trajectories under natural and artificial revegetation, and based on the potential effects of the two approaches on soil erosion and soil desiccation, we suggest that natural revegetation is preferable over artificial revegetation. Background/Aims: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a frequently occurring condition that resulted from the loss of midbrain neurons, which synthesize the neurotransmitter dopamine. In this study, we established mouse models of PD to investigate the expression of microRNA-128 (miR-128) and mechanism through which it affects apoptosis of dopamine (DA) neurons and the expression of excitatory amino acid transporter 4 (EAAT4) via binding to axis inhibition protein 1 (AXIN1). Methods: Gene expression microarray analysis was performed to screen differentially expressed miRNAs that are associated with PD. The targeting relationship between miR-128 and AXIN1 was verified via a bioinformatics prediction and dual-luciferase reporter gene assay. After separation, DA neurons were subjected to a series of inhibitors, activators and shRNAs to validate the mechanisms of miR-128 in controlling of AXIN1 in PD. Positive protein expression of AXIN1 and EAAT4 in DA neurons was determined using immunocytochemistry. miR-128 expression and the mRNA and protein levels of AXIN1 and EAAT4 were evaluated via RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. DA neuron apoptosis was evaluated using TUNEL staining. Results: We identified AXIN1 as an upregulated gene in PD based on the microarray data of GSE7621. AXIN1 was targeted and negatively mediated by miR-128. In the DA neurons, upregulated miR-128 expression or sh-AXIN1 increased the positive expression rate of EAAT4 together with mRNA and protein levels, but decreased the mRNA and protein levels of AXIN1, apoptosis rate along with the positive expression rate of AXIN1; however, the opposite trend was found in response to transfection with miR-128 inhibitors. Conclusion: Evidence from experimental models revealed that miR-128 might reduce apoptosis of DA neurons while increasing the expression of EAAT4 which might be related to the downregulation of AXIN1. Thus, miR-128 may serve as a potential target for the treatment of PD.

A novel approach for the synthesis of a variety of polysubstituted trans-2,3-dihydropyrroles from a wide range of chalcones and β-enamine ketones (esters) via iodine-promoted tandem Michael/cyclization sequence has been developed, affording the desired products in moderate to excellent yields. This methodology is a highly efficient, convenient way to access functionalized 2,3-dihydropyrroles from readily accessible substrates under mild reaction conditions.

Solvent-free reactions of C(60) with active methylene compounds, either with or without carbon tetrabromide (CBr(4)), in the presence of a base under high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions were investigated. The reaction of C(60) with diethyl bromomalonate was conducted under HSVM conditions in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na(2)CO(3) to afford cyclopropane derivative. In the presence of CBr(4), methanofullerenes, and could be obtained by the direct reaction of C(60) with diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, with the aid of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, piperidine, triethylamine or Na(2)CO(3). More interestingly, 1,4-bisadducts and were produced by the reaction of C(60) with diethyl malonate and dimethyl malonate in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine or Na(2)CO(3) under HSVM conditions. On the other hand, dihydrofuran-fused C(60) derivatives, and were obtained from the reaction of C(60) with ethyl acetoacetate, 2,4-pentanedione and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione with the aid of a base. Under the same conditions, less activated aryl methyl ketones such as 2-acetylpyridine, 2-acetylpyrazine and acetophenone provided monocarbonylated methanofullerene derivatives, and. Except for the Bingel reactions, all other reactions under the HSVM conditions are considered to proceed according to a single-electron-transfer mechanism.
