Abstract:Variation in soil water content in the delta plain has its own particularity and is significant for agricultural improvement, the utilization of water resources and flood risk mitigation. In this study, experimental data collected from a plot of farmland located in the Taihu Basin were used to investigate the temporal and vertical variation of soil water content, as well as the effects of individual rainfall on soil water and shallow groundwater and their interaction. The results showed that the variation of soil water content is dependent on the comprehensive influence of soil hydraulic properties, meteorological factors and shallow groundwater and the correlation to the groundwater table is the strongest due to the significant capillary action in the delta plain. A saturated-unsaturated three-dimensional soil water numerical model was developed for the study area in response to rainfall and evapotranspiration. Scenario simulations were performed with different soil depths for soil water content and the error source was analyzed to improve the model. The average RMSE, RE and R 2 values of the soil water content at the five depths between the measured and simulated results were 0.0192 cm 3 ·cm −3 , 2.09% and 0.8119, respectively. The results indicated that the developed model could estimate vertical soil water content and its dynamics over time at the study site at an acceptable level. Moreover, further research and application to other sites in delta plains are necessary to verify and improve the model.
In the flat lowland agricultural areas of subtropical climate zones, the runoff process has a great influence on the regional water quantity and quality. In this study, field data about rainfall, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, groundwater table, and surface water dynamics were collected in two different experimental sites in the Taihu Basin, China. Results showed that densely distributed ditches contributed to shallow groundwater depths and persistent near-saturation soil. A correlation analysis was conducted to improve the understandings of runoff generation in humid lowland areas of the Taihu Basin. It was found that a Dunne overland flow was the dominant mechanism responsible for the rapid runoff generation. The total rainfall and runoff expressed a good linear relationship with an R2 of 0.95 in the Hongqiwei test site. The initial groundwater depth was considered as the indicator of the antecedent soil moisture estimation for the close relationship. The depression storage was suggested in a range from 4.72 to 8.03 mm for an estimation based on the water balance analysis for each rainfall event, which proves that the depression storage should not be neglected when calculating the runoff generation process in humid lowlands.
The objective of this study was to investigate the flow dynamics and temperature characteristics under different reservoir operation scenarios and weather conditions in the river-reservoir system, which can be used to set scientific guidelines for river management and conservation planning strategies. The calibrated three-dimensional model provided simulated unsteady water surface elevation, temperature, velocity and discharge at different layers (depths) in different locations. A series of operation scenarios were modeled to understand and quantify formation, propagation, and disappearance of density currents that are resulted from combinations of daily repeated large release (DRLR) of different durations and solar heating. DRLRs (140 m3/s) with longer durations pushed the bottom cold water further downstream and maintained the bottom water temperature cooler. Variations of weather conditions (e.g., drops of air temperature and solar radiation) directly controled variations of bottom-layer water temperature. The daily drop rate of bottom temperature was related to the rate and duration of air temperature drop. Under the practice for the water turbines running at downstream, it clearly showed the shocking withdrawal and stopping effect from the downstream operation. The velocity for the whole cross-section were almost increased with same magnitude of about 0.1 m/s at GOUS and JML.
