Emulating key synaptic functions in electronic devices is quite significant in bioinspired applications. Artificial synaptic thin film transistors (TFT) offer a promising solution for efficient synapse simulation. Herein, artificial synapses based on indium–gallium–zinc oxide (IGZO) TFT are fabricated and the photoelectric plasticity is investigated. Versatile synaptic functions including paired‐pulse facilitation, paired‐pulse depression, and short‐term memory to long‐term memory transition are emulated. More importantly, these synaptic functions can be mediated by modulating the composition ratio of IGZO film. These achievements represent a major advance toward implementation of full synaptic functionality in neuromorphic hardware and the strategy that combines the photonics and the electrics has great prospects in optoelectronic applications.

With a rapid improvement of smartphone hardware and software, especially complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) cameras, many optical biosensors based on smartphone platforms have been presented, which have pushed the development of the point-of-care testing (POCT). Imaging-based and spectrometry-based detection techniques have been widely explored via different approaches. Combined with the smartphone, imaging-based and spectrometry-based methods are currently used to investigate a wide range of molecular properties in chemical and biological science for biosensing and diagnostics. Imaging techniques based on smartphone-based microscopes are utilized to capture microscale analysts, while spectrometry-based techniques are used to probe reactions or changes of molecules. Here, we critically review the most recent progress in imaging-based and spectrometry-based smartphone-integrated platforms that have been developed for chemical experiments and biological diagnosis. We focus on the analytical performance and the complexity for implementation of the platforms.

Novel flower-like α-NaYb(Mn)F4:Er(3+)/Tm(3+)@NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as luminescent nanothermometers have been developed by combining liquid-solid solution hydrothermal strategy with thermal decomposition strategy. Under 980 nm excitation, they exhibit intense upconversion luminescence and temperature-dependent upconversion luminescence over a wide temperature range. The influence of temperature on "band-shape" upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra and the intensity of emission bands are analyzed and discussed in detail. We further successfully test and verify that intensity ratios REr of (2)H11/2 → (4)I15/2 and (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 and RTm of (1)G4 → (3)H5 and (3)H4 → (3)H6 are sensitive to temperature, and the population of active ions follows Boltzmann-type population distribution very well. These luminescent nanothermometers could be applied over a wide temperature range from 123 to 423 K with high sensitivity, which enable them to be excellent candidates for temperature sensors.

Localized surface plasmon resonance-based plasmonic biosensors are interesting candidates for the design of portable optical biosensor platforms owing to their integration, miniaturization, multiparameter, real-time, and label-free detection characteristics. Plasmonic biosensor arrays that have been combined with microfluidics have been developed herein to detect exosomes label-free. Gold nano-ellipsoid arrays were fabricated with low-cost anodic aluminum oxide thin films that act as shadow masks for evaporation of Au. The nano-ellipsoid arrays were integrated with a microfluidic chip to achieve multiparameter detection. The anti-CD63 antibody that is specific to the exosome transmembrane protein CD63 is modified on the surface of the nano-ellipsoids. Exosome samples were injected into the biosensor platform at different concentrations and detected successfully. The detection limit was 1 ng/mL. The proposed plasmonic biosensor array can be universally applicable for the detection of other biomarkers by simply changing the antibody on the surface of the Au nano-ellipsoids. Moreover, this biosensor platform is envisaged to be potentially useful in the development of low-cost plasmonic-based biosensors for biomarker detection and for the investigation of exosomes for noninvasive disease diagnoses.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) materials, enabling energy storage by capturing of charge carriers and then the energy conversion to light via photostimulation, can find many advanced applications in various fields, spanning from radiation dosimetry, optical data storage and security, environmental monitoring, biomedicine, clinical diagnostic, to archaeology and geology. At present, there are some blocks, including the development of nanocrystallization approaches, the tailoring of optical transitions, the control of trap distribution, and the understanding of OSL mechanisms, on the road to the exploration of OSL materials. This review gives an overview of the design, preparation, characterization, optimization, application, mechanism, and prospect of OSL materials. A short introduction of the fundamental principle and history of OSL materials is presented, followed by a summary of preparation and design methods, and a survey of OSL materials reported to date. The trap engineering, mechanism, and study methodologies of OSL are summarized, after which the widespread applications of OSL materials, in traditional and newly emerging fields, are reviewed. Finally, the merits and drawbacks of the OSL materials according to the relevant reports currently available are examined. The challenges and outlooks are highlighted and discussed in terms of five important aspects that merit future research.

In this paper, intense up- and down-conversion luminescence were successfully achieved in well designed and synthesized core-shell structured NaLuF4:Gd/Yb/Er@NaLuF4:Yb@NaLuF4:Nd/Yb@NaLuF4 nanoparticles (NPs) simultaneously under 808 nm continuous-wave laser excitation. The morphologies, luminescent properties and energy transfer mechanism of the nanoparticles were studied in detail. By employing this design, multimodal imaging performance including near-infrared down-conversion optical imaging and X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging were realized in one kind of NPs. Furthermore, the 808 nm excited optical temperature sensing property of the synthesized NPs was realized in a wide temperature range by monitoring the intensities of up- and down-conversion luminescence. This study provides a novel platform based on lanthanide fluoride nanoparticles for multifunctional imaging and temperature sensing in one system.
