Three symmetrical and one unsymmetrical dimolybdenum dimers, namely, [Mo2(DAniF)3]2(E2CC6H4CE2) (DAniF = N,N′-di(p-anisyl)formamidinate and E = O or S), are structurally and electronically closely related. The mixed-valence cation radicals display well-defined metal to ligand (ML), ligand to metal (LM), and metal to metal (MM) charge transfer absorption bands. Successive thiolations of the complexes result in steady increases of the electronic coupling between the two [Mo2] units. The electronic coupling matrix elements (H ab) calculated from the Hush model fall in the range of 600–900 cm–1, which are remarkably consistent with the results from the CNS superexchange formalism. Spectroscopic analyses suggest that the intramolecular electron transfer occurs by electron-hopping and hole-hopping in concert. The rate constants (k et) are estimated in the range of 1011–1012 s–1 for the symmetrical analogues and 107 s–1 for the unsymmetrical species. The ultrafast electron transfer in such a weakly coupled system (H ab < 1000 cm–1) is attributed to the d(δ)–p(π) conjugation between the dimetal centers and the bridge.

Noncovalent interactions between aromatic compounds and fullerenes have received considerable attention in various fields of science and technology. Employing benzene (C6H6) and C60 fullerene as model molecules, we theoretically explored in the present study the nature of this kind of noncovalent interaction. Our results clearly show that the π···π stacking configurations of the complex C6H6···C60 are more strongly bound than in the C-H···π analogues, and the C-H···π interactions in the C-H···π configurations of C6H6···C60 are not of the hydrogen bonds. According to symmetry adapted perturbation theory analyses, all of the configurations of C6H6···C60 are dominated by dispersion forces. The percentage of the dispersion components in the overall attractive interactions for the π···π stacking configurations is smaller than the percentage of the dispersion components in the overall attractive interactions for the C-H···π configurations, whereas the percentage of the electrostatic terms in the overall attractive interactions for the π···π stacking configurations is larger than the percentage of the electrostatic terms in the overall attractive interactions for the C-H···π configurations. This is distinctly different from the case of the benzene dimer.

Bombyx batryticatus (B. batryticatus), a well-known traditional animal Chinese medicine, has been commonly used in China for thousands of years. The present paper reviewed advances in traditional uses, origin, chemical constituents, pharmacology and toxicity studies of B. batryticatus. The aim of the paper is to provide more comprehensive references for modern B. batryticatus study and application. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) culture, drugs containing B. batryticatus have been used to treat convulsions, headaches, skin prurigo, scrofula, tonsillitis and fever. Many studies indicate B. batryticatus contains various compounds, including protein and peptides, fatty acids, flavonoids, nucleosides, steroids, coumarin, polysaccharide and others. Numerous investigations also have shown that extracts and compounds from B. batryticatus exert a wide spectrum of pharmacological effects both in vivo and in vitro, including effects on the nervous system, anticoagulant effects, antitumor effects, antibacterial and antifungal effects, antioxidant effects, hypoglycemic effects, as well as other effects. However, further studies should be undertaken to investigate bioactive compounds (especially proteins and peptides), toxic constituents, using forms and the quality evaluation and control of B. batryticatus. Furthermore, it will be interesting to study the mechanism of biological activities and structure-function relationships of bioactive constituents in B. batryticatus.

The C-Hal (Hal = Cl, Br, or I) bond-length change and the corresponding vibrational frequency shift of the C-Hal stretch upon the C-Hal···Y (Y is the electron donor) halogen bond formation have been determined by using density functional theory computations. Plots of the C-Hal bond-length change versus the corresponding vibrational frequency shift of the C-Hal stretch all give straight lines. The coefficients of determination range from 0.94366 to 0.99219, showing that the correlation between the C-Hal bond-length change and the corresponding frequency shift is very good in the halogen-bonded complexes. The possible effects of vibrational coupling, computational method, and anharmonicity on the bond-length change-frequency shift correlation are discussed in detail.
