Liuwei Dihuang pill (LDP) was assessed for its effects on renal deficiency.90 STZ induced DN rats were divided into groups (n = 22) without treatment (STZ) and LDP treated (STZ-L) (n = 23), Zhenwu decoction treated (STZ-Z) (n = 22), and valsartan treated (STZ-V) (n = 23) groups, with 16 normal control rats. Total urine protein (TP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine (Cr) were measured. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations as well as expression/phosphorylation of SMAD3, SMAD2, and α-SMA, TGF-β, RI /II, P38, ERK, and NF-kB in renal tissues were determined. In vitro experiments analyzed the effect of enhanced TGF-β containing rat serums of the STZ groups on mesangial cells with and without transient transfection with a cytoglobin-containing plasmid.LDP treatment reduced the kidney coefficient, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and urine protein and prevented pathological changes. Expression of SOD and NOS in kidney tissue was increased but MDA expression reduced. LDP modulated multiple pathways, and its administration inhibited the phosphorylation of SMADS, ERK, p38, and the expression of NF-kB, α-SMA, and TGF-β RI/II, and upregulated the expression of cytoglobin. In vitro studies revealed that overexpression of cytoglobin suppressed phosphorylation of Smad2, ERK, and p38 induced by TGF-β and expression of NF-kB, α-SMA, and TGF-β RI.LDP prevented renal fibrosis and protected glomerular mesangial cells by upregulation of cytoglobin and suppression of multiple pathways involving TGF-β/SMADS, MAPK, NF-kB signaling.

Dencichine (beta-N-oxalyl-l-alpha,beta-diaminopropionic acid) is a haemostatic agent present in well-known traditional Chinese medicinal herbs such as Panax notoginseng, as well as other Panax species. It is also a reported neurotoxic agent found in Lathyrus sativus (grass pea seed) and cycad seeds. A method was developed for quantitative determination of the non-protein amino acid, dencichine, in plant samples of P. notoginseng and the adventitious roots directly from the explants of P. notoginseng after derivatization with ethyl chloroformate (ECF) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). l-2-chlorophenylalanine was used as an internal standard. Calibration curves were linear (r(2)=0.9988, n=6) in the range of 10-800 microg/ml for dencichine. Limit of detection and quantification for dencichine were 0.5 microg/ml and 2 microg/ml, respectively. This rapid and specific method may be applied to the quantification of dencichine in complex medicinal plants and their products.

We investigate the tail dependence between sovereign debt distress and bank non-performing loans (NPLs) using a large sample of developed and emerging countries in recent decades. Considering the feedback loop of sovereign debt and bank loan distress, we use three copula models to analyze the asymmetry of tail dependence structure between sovereign debt exposure and bank NPLs. We use the Gaussian copula marginal regression to control the concurrent impact of other macroeconomic variables. We provide evidence that sovereign debt indicates an important determinant of NPLs. We also find that there is tail dependence between sovereign debt distress and bank NPLs, whereas the tail dependence coefficients vary across countries. Our findings shed light on the influence of fiscal distress on bank loan distress and provide immediate implications for the design of macro prudential and financial policy.

A COQ model plays an important role in the total quality cost survey. Based on the methodology of continuous quality improvement, a dynamic COQ model for different quality level is developed in this paper. A quality level is defined by Six Sigma level that can be measured by two indicators. The relationships among the four major quality costs are analyzed. Finally, the curves of total quality costs for different quality level are presented.

Centrifugal turbines have recently regained interest of the engineering community as they could serve as cost-effective alternatives in diverse energy applications. In this device, the energized flow undergoes expansion in the radial outward direction while being entrained by a circular arrangement of airfoil-shaped blades. Yet, their primary and advanced performance estimations have dubiously relied on axial turbine loss correlations as part of their current design paradigm. To the authors knowledge, any convincing and reliable assessment of such practice has still not been reported. Thereupon, this paper conducts an inferential comparative study in which losses of several twin centrifugal and axial cascades are predicted by means of empirical axial loss correlations backed with credible 3D CFD simulations. Ultimately, the significant results disparity and inconsistency points out the inadequacy of the identified practice and the need of a proper and practical centrifugal turbine loss model.

Quality abnormal pattern recognition for dynamic process is the key problem to achieve the online quality control and diagnose of automatic production. In the practical applications, there are some existing problems such as computational complexity and low recognition accuracy. A recognition method for quality abnormal pattern of dynamic process with PCA-SVM was proposed. This paper proposes a feature selection technique that employs a principal component analysis, to avoid this information loss. Then, the extracted features were treated as input vector for SVM classifier, following a particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the generalization performance of the recognizer. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has very high recognition accuracy and high generalization ability. It is significant for quality monitoring and diagnosis in manufacture dynamic process.

In Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN), the conception of time series icon based on neural impulse oscillation realized face recognition by using average time series icon and average Euclidean distance. Simulations showed that the approach is effective and possesses better recognition effect for various faces and complicated expressions.
