Perlite is a volcanic glass composed mainly of amorphous aluminum silicate that has SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 with fewer impurities such as heavy metals as its main components. Amorphous (glassy) perlite with physical properties such as lightweight and excellent heat resistance, fire resistance, chemical resistance and heat-insulating properties is used in lightweight aggregates and insulation. It has also been used as a filter aid after grinding foamed perlite. It has not been used as an environmental cleanup materials, however, because the ion-exchange capacity of perlite is very low. In this study, we tried to synthesize a hybrid filter aid with a chemical adsorption capability by synthesizing zeolite on the surface of the perlite to enhance its filtering abilities. Observation of scanning electron microscope images was conducted to confirm the generation of Linde Type A (LTA-type) zeolites on the surface of the perlite. LTA-type zeolites were found to be precipitated on the surface of perlite from the transmission electron microscope observation results.
Various zeolites were synthesized though hydrothermal treatment of perlite with alkaline solutions in order to facilitate effective use of the discarded perlite. Perlite is volcanic glass mainly composed of amorphous aluminum silicate and its composition is a main component SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 with less impurities such as heavy metals. Therefore, zeolite synthesis from perlite is more convenient compared to from other waste materials (slag, ash, etc.). The obtained zeolites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and SEM. As the result, FAU, PHI, SOD and CAN zeolites were able to be generated from perlite by changing the hydrothermal treatment condition.
Abstract. Perlite is volcanic glass mainly composed of amorphous aluminum silicate, mainly composed SiO2 and Al2O3 with less impurities such as heavy metals. Amorphous (glassy) perlite is used in lightweight aggregate and insulation. In addition, it has also been used as a filter aid by grinding the expanded perlite. However, it has not been used as environmental cleanup materials, because the ion exchange capacity of the perlite is very low. In this study, we tried to synthesize the hybrid filter aid with chemical adsorption capacity by synthesizing the zeolite on the surface of the perlite. As a result, by using the hydrothermal synthesis method, zeolite surface modified perlite was synthesized in which the LTA type zeolites were generated on the surface of the perlite.
Perlite is a white powder of expanded aluminum silicate manufactured by heat treatment after grinding the perlite ore. Amorphous (glassy) perlite with physical properties such as lightweight, excellent in heat resistance, fire resistance, chemical resistance and heat insulating properties is used in lightweight aggregate and insulation. In particular, it is used as a heat insulating material for LNG tank. These tanks are double-shell-structured, in which perlite is filled as heat insulation material between the outer layer and the inner layer. Perlite is generally withdrawn from the storage tank at the time of the update and the disposal of the tank and is used as landfill materials of industrial waste. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the possibility of synthesizing tobermorite (5CaO·6SiO 2 ·5H 2 O) by hydrothermal treatment using waste perlite as a starting material in order to investigate effective reuse method of natural resources perlite .
