Nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without a cleft palate (NSCL/P) is among the most common human congenital birth defects and imposes a substantial physical and financial burden on affected individuals. Here, we conduct a case-control-based GWAS followed by two rounds of replication; we include six independent cohorts from China to elucidate the genetic architecture of NSCL/P in Chinese populations. Using this combined analysis, we identify a new locus at 16p13.3 associated with NSCL/P: rs8049367 between CREBBP and ADCY9 (odds ratio ¼ 0.74, P ¼ 8.98 Â 10 À 12 ). We confirm that the reported loci at 1q32.2, 10q25.3, 17p13.1 and 20q12 are also involved in NSCL/P development in Chinese populations. Our results provide additional evidence that the rs2235371-related haplotype at 1q32.2 could play a more important role than the previously identified causal variant rs642961 in Chinese populations. These findings provide information on the genetic basis and mechanisms of NSCL/P.
Adjuvanted vaccines afford invaluable protection against disease, and the molecular and cellular changes they induce offer direct insight into human immunobiology. Here we show that within 24 h of receiving adjuvanted swine flu vaccine, healthy individuals made expansive, complex molecular and cellular responses that included overt lymphoid as well as myeloid contributions. Unexpectedly, this early response was subtly but significantly different in people older than ∼35 years. Wide-ranging adverse clinical events can seriously confound vaccine adoption, but whether there are immunological correlates of these is unknown. Here we identify a molecular signature of adverse events that was commonly associated with an existing B cell phenotype. Thus immunophenotypic variation among healthy humans may be manifest in complex pathophysiological responses.
Vertical GaAs nanowires on Si (111) substrate were grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition via Au-catalyst vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Stacking-faults-free zinc blende nanowires were realized by using AlGaAs/GaAs buffer layers and growing under the optimized conditions, that the alloy droplet act as a catalyst rather than an adatom collector and its size and composition would keep stable during growth. The stable droplet contributes to the growth of stacking-faults-free nanowires. Moreover, by using the buffer layers, epitaxial growth of well-aligned NWs was not limited by the misfit strain induced critical diameter, and the unintentional doping of the GaAs nanowires with Si was reduced.
InAs quantum dots (QDs) are grown epitaxially on Au-catalyst-grown GaAs nanowires (NWs) by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). These QDs are about 10-30 nm in diameter and several nanometers high, formed on the {112} side facets of the GaAs NWs. The QDs are very dense at the base of the NW and gradually sparser toward the top until disappearing at a distance of about 2 μm from the base. It can be concluded that these QDs are formed by adatom diffusion from the substrate as well as the sidewalls of the NWs. The critical diameter of the GaAs NW that is enough to form InAs QDs is between 120 and 160 nm according to incomplete statistics. We also find that these QDs exhibit zinc blende (ZB) structure that is consistent with that of the GaAs NW and their edges are faceted along particular surfaces. This hybrid structure may pave the way for the development of future nanowire-based optoelectronic devices.
Previous animal and association studies have shown that the MSX1 gene is associated with oral clefts. Our aim was to investigate association between variants in the MSX1 gene and oral clefts in a Han Chinese population. Our study group consisted of 206 nonsyndromic oral cleft (NSOC) nuclear families (including the patients and their parents) and 224 controls. The three variants evaluated in this study were single-nucleotide polymorphisms rs3821949 and rs12532 and a missense mutation P147Q. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was used to genotype the three markers. Case-control and family-based association analyses were carried out. In the case-control analysis, no significant differences in genotypic or allelic frequencies were observed in any of the two single-nucleotide polymorphisms between patients and controls. Although the homozygous T allele for P147Q was not detected in any sample in this population, heterozygotes were more prevalent in NSOC (1.2%) when compared with the controls (0%). The analyses for family-based association did not suggest association between any of the three variants and NSOC. No significant association was found between NSOC and rs3821949 or rs12532 in MSX1 gene, whereas an association was observed between the P147Q variant and cleft lip with cleft palate in the case-control analysis.
As
an emerging ultrathin semiconductor material, Bi2O2Se exhibits prominent performances in electronics, optoelectronics,
ultrafast optics, etc. However, until now, the in-plane
growth of Bi2O2Se thin films is mostly fulfilled
on atomically flat mica substrates with interfacial electrostatic
forces setting obstacles for Bi2O2Se transfer
to fabricate functional van der Waals heterostructures. In this work,
controlled growth of inclined Bi2O2Se ultrathin
films is realized with apparently reduced interfacial contact areas
upon mica flakes. Consequently, the transfer of Bi2O2Se could be facile by overcoming weaker electrostatic interactions.
From cross-sectional characterizations at the Bi2O2Se/mica interfaces, it is found that there are no oxide buffer
layers in existence for both in-plane and inclined growths, while
the un-neutralized charge density is apparently decreased for inclined
films. By mechanical pressing, inclined Bi2O2Se could be transferred onto SiO2/Si substrates, and back-gated
Bi2O2Se field effect transistors are fabricated,
outperforming previously reported in-plane Bi2O2Se devices transferred with the assistance of corrosive acids and
adhesive polymers. Furthermore, Bi2O2Se/graphene
heterostructures are fulfilled by a probe tip to fabricate hybrid
phototransistors with pristine interfaces, exhibiting highly efficient
photoresponses. The results in this work demonstrate the potential
of inclined Bi2O2Se to act as a building block
for prospective van der Waals heterostructures.
Formation mechanism and optical properties of InAs quantum dots (QDs) on the surface of GaAs nanowires (NWs) were investigated. This NW-QDs hybrid structure was fabricated by Au-catalyzed metal organic chemical vapor deposition. We found that the formation and distribution of QDs were strongly influenced by the deposition time of InAs as well as the diameter of GaAs NWs. A model based on the adatom diffusion mechanism was proposed to describe the evolution process of the QDs. Photoluminescence emission from the InAs QDs with a peak wavelength of 940 nm was observed at room temperature. The structure also exhibits a decoupling feature that QDs act as gain medium, while NW acts as Fabry-Perot cavity. This hybrid structure could serve as an important element in high-performance NW-based optoelectronic devices, such as near-infrared lasers, optical detectors, and solar cells.
