Chemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) may be a pathway to retard the current trend of rapid global warming. However, the current economic cost of chemical fixation remains high because the chemical fixation of CO2 usually requires high temperature or high pressure. The rational design of an efficient catalyst that works at ambient conditions might substantially reduce the economic cost of fixation. Here, we report the rational design of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as efficient CO2 fixation catalysts under ambient conditions based on the finding of “pore enrichment”, which is concluded by a detailed investigation of the 10994 COFs. The best predicted COF, Zn-Salen-COF-SDU113, is synthesized, and its efficient catalytic performance for CO2 cycloaddition to terminal epoxide is confirmed with a yield of 98.2% and turnover number (TON) of 3068.9 under ambient conditions, which is comparable to the reported leading catalysts. Moreover, this COF achieves the cycloaddition of CO2 to 2,3-epoxybutane under ambient conditions among all porous materials. This work provides a strategy for designing porous catalysts in the economic fixation of carbon dioxide.

Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is a critically endangered species. A flume-type respirometer, with video, was used to conduct two consecutive stepped velocity tests at 10, 15, 20, and 25 °C. Extent of recovery was measured after the 60-min recovery period between trials, and the recovery ratio for critical swimming speed (U ) averaged 91.88% across temperatures. Temperature (T) effects were determined by comparing U, oxygen consumption rate (MO ), and tail beat frequency (TBF) for each temperature. Results from the two trials were compared to determine the effect of exercise. The U occurring at 15 °C in both trials was significantly higher than that at 10 and 25 °C (p < 0.05). The U was plotted as a function of T and curve-fitting allowed calculation of the optimal swimming temperature 3.28 BL/s at 15.96 °C (trial 1) and 2.98 BL/s at 15.85 °C (trial 2). In trial 1, MO increased rapidly with U, but then declined sharply as swimming speed approached U . In trial 2, MO increased more slowly, but continuously, to U . TBF was directly proportional to U and the slope (dTBF/dU) for trial 2 was significantly lower than that for trial 1. The inverse slope (tail beats per body length, TB/BL) is a measure of swimming efficiency and the significant difference in slopes implies that the exercise training provided by trial 1 led to a significant increase in swimming efficiency in trial 2.

Achieving an effective combination of various temperature control measures is critical for temperature control and crack prevention of concrete dams. This paper presents a procedure for optimizing the temperature control scheme of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams that couples the finite element method (FEM) with a sensitivity analysis method. In this study, seven temperature control schemes are defined according to variations in three temperature control measures: concrete placement temperature, water-pipe cooling time, and thermal insulation layer thickness. FEM is employed to simulate the equivalent temperature field and temperature stress field obtained under each of the seven designed temperature control schemes for a typical overflow dam monolith based on the actual characteristics of a RCC dam located in southwestern China. A sensitivity analysis is subsequently conducted to investigate the degree of influence each of the three temperature control measures has on the temperature field and temperature tensile stress field of the dam. Results show that the placement temperature has a substantial influence on the maximum temperature and tensile stress of the dam, and that the placement temperature cannot exceed 15 °C. The water-pipe cooling time and thermal insulation layer thickness have little influence on the maximum temperature, but both demonstrate a substantial influence on the maximum tensile stress of the dam. The thermal insulation thickness is significant for reducing the probability of cracking as a result of high thermal stress, and the maximum tensile stress can be controlled under the specification limit with a thermal insulation layer thickness of 10 cm. Finally, an optimized temperature control scheme for crack prevention is obtained based on the analysis results.

(male and female), I. limuensis sp. nov. (male and female), I. longa sp. nov. (male and female), I. minuta sp. nov. (male and female), I. nigricula sp. nov. (male and female), I. ramosa sp. nov. The males of two known species, Corusca liaoi (Peng & Li, 2006) and Insula maculata (Peng & Kim, 1997), which are transferred from Eupoa, are reported for the first time.
