The majority of tilapia farming is used for the production of fillets, resulting in the generation of waste that can be used to increase food stocks by producing minced fish. The aim of this study was to characterize and evaluate the viability of boiling and mechanical techniques for obtaining minced fish in relation to performance, physical-chemical and microbiological parameters and to reduce the waste generated in the process of filleting Nile tilapia. Based on performance outcomes, the mechanical technique proved to be 12% more efficient than the boiling one. The cost of the boiling technique was higher due to performance and operating costs. On both techniques microbiological alterations were not observed. Centesimal analysis results showed a difference in humidity between the techniques, which was expected due to loss of water during the boiling process, which possibly also affected protein levels. Dver all, the use of a deboning machine allied lower operating cost, better performance, quality and practicality. The debone machine technique it's feasible considering the large volume of waste generated daily on fish farms, which requires a speedy and effective disposal. Further, makes possible obtaining a nutritional raw material of high added-value and contributing to the reduction of environmental impacts.

Ectoparasitic infestation in dairy cattle, the most common being Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, causes significant loss in production. The control of ectoparasites often occurs incorrectly, resulting in resistance to the active ingredients and residues in milk. To understand of acaricide use in the microregion of Alfenas, Minas Gerais (Brazil), questionnaires were applied to the owners of 100 dairy farms in the region and were selected randomly. Dairy farms were allocated according to production scale: up to 150 liters/day, 151-400 liters/day and more than 400 liters/day. The interviewees were asked about production characteristics, acaricide management and active ingredients. The interview answers were subjected to descriptive analysis. Results showed that all properties, independent of production-scale, used acaricides. The most cited was: Cypermethrin Chlorpyrifos Citronellal (31%), Fluazuron (18.6%) and Fipronil (17%). Among the interviewed, 41,1% use drugs that have restrictions that are not allowed in legislation for use in lactating dairy cows (fluazuron, fipronil, ivermectin). 15% affirmed they weren’t aware of the “withdrawal period” of medication and 73% change in the active ingredient used. In order to revert this antiparasitic drug’s resistance situation and contamination of milk with drug residues, it is necessary to focus on the awareness of milk producers and training of labor.

SUMMARY The objective of this review is to discuss aspects of the practice of endurance racing and alternatives to reduce oxidative stress in horses. Characterized by a high aerobic effort and requirement of the organic systems for maintenance of homeostasis, the endurance race is a form of sport for horses that demands great attention to the physical preparation of these animals and must be progressive, paying attention to the physiological parameters to evaluate the adaptation of the organism. To begin the preparation, the animals must be at least five years old and the duration can be on average of three years. Another factor that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of competing horses is the occurrence of oxidative stress, due to the accumulation of free radicals in the tissues, generating post-exercise muscle injuries. Antioxidant supplementation has been an alternative to this disorder. Several studies using compounds rich in antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), demonstrate positive effects on antioxidant status, markers of oxidative stress and muscle enzymes, which may represent an improvement in performance during the exercise and recovery of animals destined to the practice of equestrian sports. Therefore, a correct physical preparation becomes crucial and antioxidant supplementation may be used to maintain the health and well-being of horses destined to the equestrian endurance practice.

The purpose of this review is to demonstrate the findings on the use of natural compounds as preservatives in meat and meat products as a healthier and safer alternative compared to the use of synthetic preservatives. Due to its biological composition, meat and its derivatives are susceptible to spoilage, a process that can be delayed with the use of synthetic food preservatives. However, it is known that some products can trigger undesirable effects on consumer health. In recent years, there has been a greater demand for products obtained naturally or directly from a biological organism without laboratory interference in their composition, in order to reduce risks to the consumer. The most promising compounds belong to the groups of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which have a proven, positive effect on oxidation and microbial development. Findings on the use of natural compounds as preservatives in meat and meat products demonstrate an alternative to increased shelf life without risking consumer health.
