The consideration of the subject of water resources, seen as a part of cultural heritage, generally includes water-related architectural structures such as bridges, aqueducts, and cisterns. Groundwater resources and related structures, however, receive little attention as heritage assets, and they are mostly forgotten together with the valuable information they hold. In this sense, this study aims to provide an accurate assessment of groundwater heritage and to suggest proposals for conservation through the case of the historic wells of Kadıovacık village in the Urla district of İzmir. Although the region where the village is located is rich in groundwater resources, the residents have suffered from drought for ages due to the specific geological characteristics of the Kadıovacık polje. The limited amount of water resources in Kadıovacık village have karstic characteristics and have shaped the life and topography of the region. To access and harvest this limited groundwater, a group of wells had been constructed on the ridge of the hill. These wells have been idle since 1980s with the supply of city main water. In line with the aim, a comprehensive heritage valuation by an interdisciplinary group of experts is essential to reveal the significance of the relatively humble wells. Accordingly, a multi-method system is used, including historical, social, cultural, architectural, geological, hydrogeological, and environmental aspects. The results show that although the wells are generally considered to be less important as heritage assets in terms of their physical features, an in-depth evaluation demonstrates their high significance for the village community.
Today, while daily problems of Turkish are being discussed, especially the negative effects of English on Turkish are frequently mentioned, the education in foreign language is debated or the language revolution issue which we recently started to hear again is revived. As a matter of fact these discussions about language are closely related with education because it directly affects language education. In this examination which aims to present recent evidence, the reflection of language discussions to Turkish education will be explained through the circulars sent to schools related with this issue.Key Words: Turkish language education, circulars of national ministry of education about Turkish, old-new discussion in Turkish ÖZETGünümüzde Türkçenin güncel sorunları tartışılırken, özellikle İngilizcenin Türkçe üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri sıklıkla konuşulur, yabancı dille öğretim meselesi tartışılır yahut yakın zamanlarda tekrar duymaya başladığımız dil devrimi meselesi yeniden gündeme getirilir.
Sustainability is a complex term, which is often used interchangeably with sustainable development. We observed that sustainability is on the agenda of universities and local governments in Turkey, and frequently included in scientic projects as a keyword. Despite the growing popularity of the concept of sustainability in Turkish academia, there is no detailed examination on how it is understood by academics and how this reects on their scientic outputs. Since the notion of sustainability is instrumentalised by discourses such as development, progress and modernism, on which capitalism nourishes, it also requires thinking about how closely it intertwined with capitalism. The reection of the positivist paradigm on the academic discourses, which is the basis of contemporary techno-scientic-economic discourse, requires critical scrutiny on sustainability as a concept and a practice. For Turkey, this kind of critical inquiry is lacking in the literature. Therefore, we examined the perceptions of the academicians towards the concept of sus...
