Common pollutants such as heavy metals and cadmium is among those with high environmental concerns. In vivo studies had shown that cadmium (Cd) causes oocyte degeneration and embryo mortality, and lowers pregnancy rates in mammals. However, there is limited information available about direct effects of Cd on oocyte maturation and/or embryo development. This study was aimed to investigate if Cd has any effect on the oocyte maturation and/or embryo development in vitro. Bovine COCs were collected from the slaughter house and cultured for 24 h in serum-free media only (Controls) or supplemented with 0.2, 2.0 and 20.0 μM CdCl2. At 24 h cumulus cell expansion was assessed in all COCs. COCs were either denuded and stained for determination of nuclear maturation or fertilized for assessment of subsequent embryo development. Cd at the lowest concentration (0.2 μM) did not affect any of the parameters studied. However, at higher concentrations (2.0 and 20.0 μM) it significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the percentage of fully-expanded COCs and significantly (P < 0.05) increased the percentage of partially and/or non-expanded COCs compared to controls and 0.2 μM. Cadmium at higher concentrations (2.0 and 20.0 μM) also significantly (P < 0.01) reduced the percentage of oocytes reaching metaphase II stage compared to controls and 0.2 μM. Post-fertilization cleavage rate in presumptive zygotes and blastocyst development significantly (P < 0.05) reduced 0.2, 2.0 and 20.0 μM CdCl2 compared to the controls (0.0 μM). In conclusion, these results suggest that Cd had direct detrimental effects on the bovine oocyte maturation and its developmental competence.

Başbuğ O, Akar Y, Ercan N. Sivas yöresindeki süt sığırlarında subklinik ketozisin prevalansının araştırılması. Amaç: Türkiye'de subklinik ketozisin (SKK) prevalansının belirlenmesine yönelik sınırlı sayıda çalışma yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye'nın Sivas ilindeki süt sığırı işletmelerinde bulunan Holştayn süt ineklerinde SKK'in prevalansının belirlenmesi ve serum β-hidroksibütirat (BHB) ile glikoneogenezisde rol alan glikoz, albümin ve total kolesterol konsantrasyonları arasındaki ilişkinin tespit edilmesi amaçlandı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmada yaşları 3-6 arasında değişen, kuru dönem (40 baş) ve doğumdan sonraki 1-8 haftalar (160 baş) arasında bulunan toplam 200 baş holştayn inekler kullanıldı. Sistematik klinik muayenesi yapılan hayvanlardan kan örnekleri alındı. SKK'li ineklerin belirlenmesinde eşik değeri olarak 1.0 mmol/L BHB düzeyi alındı. Tüm ineklerin serum glikoz, albümin ve total kolesterol düzeyleri belirlendi. Bulgular: Sivas yöresinde yetiştirilen Holştayn ırkı ineklerde SKK prevalansı %12 olarak tespit edildi. SKK'lı ineklerin kan BHB seviyelerinin laktasyonun ilk haftalarında daha yüksek seviyelerde seyrettiği, kan glikoz ve total kolesterol düzeyleri ile arasında negatif korelasyonun olduğu belirlendi. Öneri: Süt verimi yüksek olan işletmelerde, periyodik aralıklarla BHB düzeylerinin belirlenmesi ve yüksek BHB'li ineklerde gerekli önlemlerin alınması yararlı olacaktır.

Özet: Üç yaşında, 2.7 kg ağırlığında, ilk doğumunu yapan, canlı ilk yavrusunu evde doğurduktan 8 saat sonra vulva dudakları arasından dışarı gelen yaklaşık 2 cm eninde 4 cm uzunluğunda koyu kahverengi tonlarında bir kitlesi olan Van kedisi Erciyes Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi, Eğitim Araştırma ve Uygulama Hastanesine getirildi. Kedinin klinik muayenesi yapıldı ve prolapsus uteri tanısı konuldu. Kedinin kan kalsiyum değerinin düşük olduğu (6.6 mg/dl) ve bunun uterus atonisi oluşturarak prolapsus uteriye sebep olabileceği değerlendirildi. Transabdominal ultrasonografi muayenesinde, prolabe olmayan kornu uteride kalp atımları olan iki yavru görüldü. Prolabe olan sağ kornu uterinin ödemi azaltıldıktan sonra vajina boşluğuna ret edildi. Daha sonra kedi gaz anestezisi altında operasyona alındı. Öncelikle sol kornu uteriye yapılan kesiyle biri canlı diğeri ölü (ölüm muhtemelen operasyon sürecinde oldu) olan yavrular alındı. Daha sonra prolabe olan sağ kornu uteri ucundan nazikçe çekilerek eversiyonu düzeltildi. Müteakiben ovariohisterektomi operasyonu yapıldı. 10 gün sonra hayvan sahibi aranarak, anne ile yavrularının sağlıklı olduğu öğrenildi. Canlı bir yavru doğurduktan sonra bir kornu uterisi prolabe ve diğer kornu uterisi normal (içerisinde canlı iki yavru olan) konumda olan bir Van kedisi güç doğum vakası kliniğimizde ilk defa görülmüştür. Anahtar kelimeler: Canlı yavru, güç doğum, prolapsus uteri, van kedisi A Rare Case Report: Uterine Prolapse in a Van Cat Summary: A 3-year old primipara Van cat weighing 2.7 kg, which had given a live fetus birth eight hours at home before being brought to our clinic at Erciyes University, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Education, Research and Practice Hospital, with a dark brown mass of about 2 cm width and 4 cm in length coming out of the vulva lips. The cat was examined clinically and diagnosed as uterine prolapse. It was evaluated that the cat's blood calcium level was low (6.6 mg/dl), probably causing uterine atony and uterine prolapse. In transabdominal ultrasonography examination, two pups with heart beats in the left corn uterus without prolapse were seen. After edema was reduced on the prolapsed right corn uterine, it was rejected into the vagina cavity. Immediately later, the cat was operated on under gas anesthesia. First of all, the offspring, one alive and the other dead (probably died during operation) were taken with the left corn incision. Then the eversion was corrected by pulling the prolapsed right corn uterus tip gently. Subsequently, an ovariohysterectomy operation was performed. After 10 days, the animal owner was called and it was learned that the mother and her offspring were healthy. After giving birth to a live fetus, the Van cat dystocia case with a corn uterine prolapse and the other corn uterine in the normal position (two live kittens inside) was seen in our clinic for the first time.

Özet: Kısraklarda doğum sonrası metritis görülme sıklığı düşüktür, fakat doğum sırası yaralanma ve yavru zarlarının atılamadığında ise artmaktadır. Postpartum metritis; genital bölgenin yaralanması, uterus durgunluğu ve yavru zarlarının atılamaması ile ilişkilidir. Yaygın olarak tespit edilen bakteriler; E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, beta hemolitik streptokoklar ve stafilokoklardır. Tedavi; uterus yıkaması, oksitosin kullanımı, kontrollü egzersiz, damar içi sıvı verilmesi, geniş spektrumlu antibiyotik ve antiinflamatuvar kullanımını içermektedir. Bu derlemede, son literatürler ışığında kısraklarda doğum sonrası görülen metritisin sebepleri ve tedavisi değerlendirildi. Postpartum metritis was associated with genital tract trauma, uterine inertia and retained placenta. Commonly isolated bacteria include E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, beta haemolytic Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. Treatment involves uterine lavage, oxytocin therapy, controlled exercise, intravenous fluids, broad spectrum antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. In this review, causes and treatment of postpartum metritis in mares were focused in light of recent articles in the literature.
