RESUMOA pesquisa apresentada nesta dissertação realiza uma análise longitudinal da transição ocupacional do trabalhador jovem a partir de sua inserção e permanência no mercado de trabalho formal no estado do Espírito Santo. Utilizou-se os registros administrativos da Relação Anual de Informações Social Identificada (RAIS Identificada) para estimar os efeitos médios de variáveis como setor de atividade, ocupação, escolaridade, dentre outras, sobre a remuneração-hora. Por meio de modelo de regressão com dados em painel se obteve a remuneração-hora predita. A partir do predito da remuneração-hora, os indivíduos foram classificados em quintos da remuneração, sobre os quais foi aplicada uma matriz de transição.Os resultados mostram que os indivíduos que se inseriram no mercado de trabalho formal nos quintos mais baixos da remuneração durante a juventude reproduziram padrão semelhante na idade adulta, assim como aqueles que se inseriram nos quintos mais altos. Desta forma, a pesquisa aponta para a importância da boa qualidade de inserção ocupacional na juventude na determinação de melhores trajetórias trabalhistas na idade adulta.
