A comb fiber filter based on modal interference is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Here two cascaded up-tapers are used to excite the cladding mode, and a core-offset jointing point is used to act as an interference component. Experimental results show that this kind of structure possesses a comb filter property in a range of the C-band. The measured extinction ratio is better than 12 dB with an insertion loss of about 11 dB. A switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser based on this novel comb filter is demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controller, the output laser can be switched among single-, dual-, and three-wavelengths with a side mode suppression ratio of better than 45 dB.

A widely tunable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser based on a cascaded Sagnac loop interferometer incorporating a multimode interference filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The mode selection is implemented by using the cascaded Sagnac loop interferometer with two segments of polarization maintaining fibers, and the wavelength tuning was achieved by using the refractive index characteristic of multimode interference effects. The tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser has a wavelength tuning of about 40 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio of more than 50 dB.

In this paper, we present a simple, compact, and highly sensitive optical fiber curvature sensor. It consists of dual no-core fibers for coupling energy from the lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF), and recoupling the energy into the lead-out SMF. The sensing section is constituted by multicladding fiber with a length of 5 cm. In the experiment, the spectrum shows a blueshift, and the energy corresponding to the resonant wavelength shows a cosine series with a bending of the sensing segment. The curvature sensitivity around the wavelength of 1550 nm shows -39.02 nm/m(-1) within the curvature range from 0.3 to 2.14 m(-1). The temperature sensitivity is 78.2 pm/°C in the temperature range of 10 °C-60 °C. It implies the possibility of temperature measurement.

A fiber-optic strain and curvature sensor based on no-core fiber has been proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated using a multimode fiber without cladding, known as the no-core fiber with a thinner diameter. The jointing point between the no-core fiber and single-mode fiber is a taper, which will improve the sensitivity of the sensor. The peak wavelength shift of the sensor exhibits an excellent response for strain and curvature changes.Index Terms-Multimode interference, fiber optical sensor, strain, curvature.

We propose a new approach to realize switchable mode operation in a few-mode erbium-doped fiber laser. The ring fiber laser structure is constructed with a core-offset splicing between single-mode fiber and dual-mode fiber. Stable operating on the fundamental mode laser and second-order mode laser individually or simultaneously is realized by appropriately adjusting the state of the polarization controller and bending status of the few-mode fiber Bragg grating. The narrow 3 dB linewidth less than 0.02 nm and high optical signal to noise ratio more than 42 dB are obtained for both modes in either separate laser or simultaneous laser operating conditions.
