Las interacciones entre hormigas y otros insectos pueden afectar directa o indirectamente las plantas de café y su producción. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo describir estas interacciones en cuatro plantaciones de café con y sin presencia de árboles de sombra, en el sitio Pescador (Caldono) departamento del Cauca. En cada plantación se seleccionaron 45 arbustos de café, y en cada uno de ellos se escogieron dos ramas opuestas de la parte productiva. Una de las ramas se excluyó del paso de hormigas y la otra se dejó libre. Se identificaron las hormigas y otros insectos anotando las interacciones entre ellos. Las observaciones se realizaron durante siete meses cada dos semanas por un tiempo estimado de cinco minutos en cada rama. Se observaron 119 interacciones que involucraron 31 especies de hormigas distribuidas en siete subfamilias y 38 morfoespecies de otros insectos distribuidos en siete órdenes (Blattaria, Dermaptera, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera e Hymenoptera) y 24 familias. Las interacciones se agruparon en tres tipos: mutualismo, comensalismo y depredación. Las asociaciones predominantes fueron las mutualistas facultativas (32%), seguidas por las comensalistas (30%). Las hormigas con mayor porcentaje de asociaciones fueron Linepithema neotropicum (32%), Brachymyrmex heeri (12%) y Wasmannia auropunctata (7%). Asociaciones con hemípteros se observaron en un 53% de los casos, seguidos de coleópteros con un 27%. Se encontró una mayor riqueza de especies de insectos y de asociaciones en cafetales con sombra que en aquellos sin sombra. La complejidad estructural que presenta este tipo de agroecosistema provee más oportunidades para la fauna asociada.
Los miembros del género Drosophila, comúnmente conocidos como moscas de la fruta, han sido ampliamente analizados como un modelo biológico de gran impacto para los estudios ambientales y genéticos dado su pequeño tamaño, su breve ciclo de vida, su fácil y asequible mantenimiento, así como su rápida reproducción y numerosa descendencia. Sin embargo, aún no se ha hecho una caracterización completa de estos individuos en zonas tropicales antropizadas, lo que puede tenerun gran impacto en el desarrollo biológico de la mosca. En dicho contexto, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la presencia de los drosofílidos en la ciudad de Popayán para generar conocimiento que pueda servir de línea base en la realización de otras investigaciones. Se recolectaron 1.033 drosofílidos del género Drosophila distribuidos en tres subgéneros: Drosophila, Dorsilopha y Sophophora, y tres grupos de especies: D. repleta, D. busckii y D. melanogaster, en cuatro comunas con características bióticas muy similares, una temperatura máxima de 23 °C y una humedad máxima de 85 %. Los hallazgos constituyen la primera evidencia de la coexistencia de tres drosofílidos en la zona urbana de Popayán.
Con el fin de profundizar en el conocimiento de la herbivoría de la hormiga arriera (Atta cephalotes) en el bosque seco tropical, se estudió la actividad forrajera de 12 nidos situados en dos parches de bosque seco: seis en el Parque Natural Regional El Vínculo en el departamento del Valle del Cauca y seis en La Pachuca en el departamento del Cauca. A partir de un inventario de nidos presentes en cada parche se evidenció una mayor concentración de éstos en la zona de borde y matriz con respecto al interior de los parches con un 84,11% para el parche de El Vínculo y un 100% para La Pachuca. Con el objeto de establecer si estas zonas ofrecen más y mejores recursos a las hormigas que el interior de los parches, entre octubre de 2015 y junio de 2016, se recolectaron 300 fragmentos foliares que transportaban las hormigas, a un metro de la boca principal y a 1,2 metros del suelo sobre la pista arbórea en cada nido. Una vez identificadas las especies vegetales, el área foliar de estos fragmentos fue medida y pesada en fresco y en seco. Además, en cada nido se tomaron diferentes medidas como largo, ancho y longitud de las pistas de forrajeo y se realizó el conteo de la cantidad de bocas inactivas y activas. Se encontró que los nidos se fundan en el borde y la matriz por ser áreas con procesos sucesionales iniciales que son garantía de presencia de plantas pioneras, de hojas muy palatables y aptas para el consumo de las hormigas. Las especies de Fabaceae fueron las más preferidas. El área foliar de los fragmentos vegetales no presentó diferencias significativas entre las diferentes recolectas, ni entre nidos. Por otro lado, el peso fresco y seco de los fragmentos recolectados fue mayor en los nidos del parche de bosque El Vínculo y no hubo diferencias significativas entre el número de fragmentos de hojas recolectados en las pistas de forrajeo. La cantidad de bocas activas fue la única variable que presentó significancia estadística para los nidos de La Pachuca. Se interpreta que la actividad de forrajeo es consistente en los diferentes parches de bosque seco que subsisten en la zona suroccidente de Colombia.
