The paper applies an interdisciplinary perspective to a fictional text showing that fractals as mathematical models are a powerful tool for conceptualizing life experience in biographical narratives. The multilevel construction of Chatterton by Peter Ackroyd is explored on the basis of fractal metaphor theory. This research focuses on the LIFE IS A STORY conceptual fractal metaphor which is built up on analogical mappings, mental space connections, and blends. The fractal model of metaphor in biographical narrative, which is assigned to the formula LIFE IS A STORY f (1) + f (2) + f (3) + … + f (n), contains the mental space of the intentional source domain story, which provides a way to structure the understanding of the limiting target domain of the concept life. Fractal metaphors aim at making the conceptual metaphor flexible and dynamic, renewing its ability of self-development and self-perfection, transforming itself into one of the means of changeable conceptualization of reality.
The article examines the multimodal metaphors which actualise the concept of CHORNOBYL in the five episodes of the miniseries Chernobyl. The procedure of the analysis includes identifying and selecting the multimodal metaphors following the Filmic Metaphor Identification Procedure, construing and describing the structure of key and sub-metaphors with the target domain CHOR-NOBYL, distinguishing the modes of the domains, interpreting the meanings and attitudes that are mapped onto the target domain. The source domains DETECTIVE STORY, ESPIONAGE, DISEASE, HOSPITAL are cued via the combination of visual, auditory (sonic and musical), and verbal (written and spoken) modes.
Despite the substantial amount of publications connected with the notion of DN, there are still some unexplored aspects that can provide new insights and approaches to the study of DN that demand relevant conceptions within the framework of cognitive linguistics with a special emphasis on the acquisition of double negatives in English and Ukrainian. It is useful to grasp how the notion of negation and its particular type DN have developed as a linguistic, social, and cognitive phenomenon, and thus have long attracted attention of scholars who are interested in and concentrate on this issue. Furthermore, this linguistic interest, which is not restricted to one particular language, reveals the relevance of the topic from the perspective of SLA. This kind of study has not been done so far. verčia antrosios kalbos sakinius, kuriuose yra daugiau nei vienas neigiamas elementas, jie identifikuoja panašius ir skirtingus dvigubus neiginius pirmojoje ir antrojoje kalbose. Tai padeda geriau suprasti dvigubo neiginio esmę ir prisideda prie sėkmingo antrosios kalbos supratimo ir vartosenos.
